Saw this article this morning. A few points about it.
1. I miss the Mercury brand.
2. So glad Ford did not trademark the Durango name and let Chrysler have it.
3. I forgot just how ugly the Fairmont/Zephyr models were. But so was most everything in that era.
4. I kind of wish Ford had continued the "Trarck" or "Cruck" product line. Which is kind of what the Maverick is in my opinion.

Re "hence why National Coach Works clearly stated it’s illegal to drive with the tailgate down (as all the lights disappear)" I think DOT makes it illegal to manufacture vehicles with that capability these days.

Yikes that thing is so Ugly imo. I only had 1 mercury in all my old years, a 1976 Cougar, enjoyed it, it was a nice ride in its day, for me anyway

A highschool friend had two Cougars, they both ended up in a river at the same spot. He wasn't very good at driving around a curve at high speed.

The front clip isn't too bad, just typical malaise era car design. The rear though, yikes... 😂

I too, miss the Mercury brand.

Yup... my old '83 5.0 5spd 600 Holley hatchback Stang would eat Cougars, Camaros and Firebirds (and even a few of the SVO's too) all day long.. Only problem with them were 2nd gear synchronisers that were weak and often replaced. And then of course.... the eventual rebuild of the OEM 600 holley. Definitely fun car to drive.... especially thru the "S" curves.. (as in the brochures and advertisements of the day)!

Dodge Rampage 82-84. Chrysler being Chrysler watching the Ford attempt fail “then” trying it.

At first, I thought you were gonna mention the Dodge Durango in some type of terrible recall or something. I had no idea that Mercury was the first to use that name. Maybe it's because of the obscurity or also because I'm too young since I was far from being born back then.

In a weird way, I think it's kinda cool. Anyone I know would call it butt ugly but that's what I kind of like about it. It's ugly but unique at the same time. I would love to see one but my chances are slim to none.
