Yes that's the argument right? Just let it go the full length of the oil minder and don't worry about it.. I didn't know so I wanted to take a look.. and you know... I did pour the oil from the filter in with the rest soooo.. ah I'll never know!
So you dumped the shavings out of the filter, where they belong and got excited because the filter was doing it's job?

You did not mention if that oil pan was new and never used? If not...well those very small flakes could be leftover from previous oil changes!
If you REALLY want to look for HARMFULL particles, those in the pic are not imo, then cut open your oil filter and expand the pleats. Look in the pleated area for trapped particles.
Any suggestions for cutting open the filter without

Edited, thank you. I have indeed kept the filter but didn't have the time to open it yet.. Any suggestions on cutting it open while minimizing flakes from the outer can, so they won't be confused for shavings from the oil?

Correct. The OP should do the right thing and update/delete the post. The sample was contaminated. Check the oil level and condition at each fill up and change the oil when the monitor is under 20% or 1 year. Couldn't be any simpler.

You can buy oil filter cutting tools. Summit Racing, Jegs, places like that will have them.

2023 hybrid; first oil change done at 2,500mi. Opted to do early primarily because still in psychological honeymoon phase of owning a new vehicle 😅.. mobil1 hybrid 0w20, fl910s oil filter from Walmart, grand total $49.79

so:

- the oil appeared clean, translucent, yellow to light brownish (nowhere close to dark brown) all to be expected.

- there were the shavings! I've never seen oil from the first oil change of a vehicle before.. I did expend an hour of my life today changing oil just to scratch this itch. But talking about it isn't enough for this Internet is it? Let's look at the money shots (fyi it's not the best.. how do you get a camera to pic up sparkles in a pan of oil?)

But that little bit was it! Did emptying that out really make a difference? Is that little bit just part of normal engine use? Was there more suspended in the oil that I didn't see (since I waited til the end of the pour to observe!)

Well, I don't care I'm glad I got it out, coz she's brand new and she's mine.. let's see what happens next time 🤷

*addendum: in case anyone ever sees this and wanted to know, I was able to do the whole job without jacking the vehicle up.. just slid underneath, easy access. It was a little tight removing the undershield but still way faster than pulling out the floor jack and stands

The pig tail one is an obvious shaving. For the rest did you run a magnet through the oil? The pig tail looks something from a drilled hole that wasn’t properly wiped away.

Or, alternatively, follow the manufacturer's recommendations, do nothing more, and still have the engine outlive everything else on the vehicle, with less cost, waste, and hassle.

That's my plan.

The shavings came from somewhere, right? Filter housing or not, break in oil looks this way. You guys are making a huge deal about it when OP did nothing wrong. It really doesn't matter if the shavings were in the filter or the pan, they are small enough to be considered break in shavings.

You can change often, or you can change less.... it's totally up to you. I'll never understand why people care so much how someone else spends their time/money or the need to advise them to push for longer intervals because it's what they do. Plenty of people don't care that you want to stretch the viscosity to it's limits.

Follow the manual, or change earlier. It doesn't mean you will outlive anything either way. It's like people going on diets and dying at 40 while smokers/drinkers are living to be 90. It's a total toss up. Changing often is cheap insurance to some and it's ridiculous to argue the benefits. The only argument is "I don't want to mess with it and it costs more to do so". So do you then. BTW, the manual and the numbers you state are for perfect driving scenarios - i.e. flat surfaces, 90% highway, very little idle time etc etc. Extreme intervals are actually more "normal" for most drivers. But again, you do you. OP has the info they need... you can stop berating them.

Good call as far as changing the oil. Question is why weren't the shavings caught in the oil filter? Like you, I change my own oil and find Walmart to be the cheapest for the Motorcraft FL910s and Mobil 1. For a little better access I drive my front wheels onto two 2x6's on each side giving 3" more clearance. Love the cyber yellow.

What's pictured are not 'shavings', it's the relatively normal break-in sediment.

Some will be captured by the oil filter, and some will migrate to and settle in the bottom of the oil pan when the engine is off and will remain there and not be recirculated..

So, you are berating me for "berating" the OP, when I did nothing of the sort? Is expressing an alternative "berating?"

Wow, Oil threads get hostile fast.
I knew a guy once that ran vegtable oil in his old car and had a canister that he would put a roll of toilet paper in. He would change the toilet paper on a regular basis, but hardly ever changed the oil. It was an old car, 50s or 60s, I don't remember, but it ran really well and was all original.
