And parts of Oregon.
Big City: attendant will pump for you
Small Town / Rural you can pump your own.
Oregon got rid of attendants as of a few years ago,I was probably one of the last people to experience that joy, lol

It's hard, darn near impossible to overfill a (hybrid) Maverick gas tank. Lord knows I've tried going for the 900 mile club. The build just won't let you on these trucks.

As for the pump:
Google says:

"Gas pumps stop automatically using a brilliant, purely mechanical process called the Venturi effect. A tiny sensing port near the tip of the nozzle draws in air. When gasoline rises and blocks this hole, it restricts the airflow. This sudden pressure change triggers an internal valve that instantly stops the fuel flow."
Yep the fast fill setting on pump can cause enough pressure of air and gas fumes to trip the fuel flow valve in pump.

How would the fuel pump nozzle know the EVAP system has detected the tank has reached max level?

That nozzle ain't that smart - neither is the EVAP system that communicative.
It ain’t

The fuel suddenly backs up In the fill neck and or splashes against the nozzle,
Either way the sudden pressure wave shuts the flow off.

If you fill at the lowest setting you’re really full.
If you foam it up on the fastest fill your not as full on the first shut down.

I always fill at the slowest setting.
Our tanks are tiny, take a chill pill, go clean your windshield or something.

You don’t have twin fitty gallon diesel tanks.

Pretty sad when they don't even list the code from their diagnostics
And a defective purge valve will not cause a fueling concern

Let me be more specific.
I always try a second time after a click off. In states with "vapor recovery nozzles" premature stops are frequent.

However, when it's not premature, additional tries rarely will put in more than 0.2 gal no matter the number of tries.
I've even shaken and bounced the truck a few times. No more air will burp out. No more gas will go in. So now, one try after the first click and done. I have to prove (to myself) the first click wasn't premature. About half the time it is and 2-3 gallons go in. That's not "topping off".

First click may be reliable to trust in states / zones with different more old fashioned pump nozzles.

Once again, one size (method) does not fit all.
When you're putting that last 2-3 gallons I'm, you are filling the neck tube and not the tank. The neck tube is inserted into a rubber grommet in the tank, and it's going to degrade and leak at some point. Is it leaking yet?

Not the case. At all.
But thanks for your concern.

Putting only 10 gallons into a Maverick is silly in my opinion. I have to drive 500 miles per week so why would I only add 10 gallons each time?

New Jersey. And don't try to do it yourself! The attendants WILL threaten to call the cops.
That so ridiculous, absolutely stupid regulation, law or whatever it is. Folks there should revolt and raise hell to whoever controls that regulation imo

You won't be arrested in New Jersey for pumping your own gas. The gas station is liable and they could lose their business license.
In New Jersey, it is illegal for gas stations to allow drivers to pump their own gas, as all stations are required by law to have trained attendants dispense the fuel.

Under the 1949 Retail Gasoline Dispensing Safety Act, attendants are responsible for handling the fuel, processing your payment, and ensuring all safety procedures are met.

It happened at 36,000 km, or roughly 25,000 miles. I normally expect about 5.4L/100km or 48mpg on highway trips and about 4.0L/100km or 65mpg in city and country road travel. I took it in right away when it happened, so I do not have any idea how much the mileage dropped. Now that the valve has been replaced, I'm back to my expected mileage.
So, did it drop from 48mpg to 30mpg?

Here is the funny part. Last time I was there was pre-2020. Gas in NJ was cheaper than Maryland, Delaware, PA, and NY at the time I traveled through all of them. And the Shell station I filled at the attendant washed my windshield and rear window ! The thing I noticed was many drivers told the attendant to fill it while they went in the convenience store and spent more money. Through put is quicker with a person filling the tank for you while you buy higher margin items.

Steve,
Really curious……….
What is your cold tire pressure?
Ive always been pretty happy getting 50+/- MPG’s. Tires at low/mid 40s psi.
And everyone can get a wild reading once in a while. (As I’ve said in the past, going 2for4 on opening day does not make one a .500 hitter). But 60+ for a whole tank is truly commendable!

Back in the days of paying cash at the "Service station." Old guys who didn't like to carry change, got into the habit of rounding up to the nearest dollar.
And those who are in the 800 mile a tank club. 😯

That really doesn't look like gasoline.
