Certainly unique for the time period when most cars had the shift lever on the column.
So true. The Tempest was my first car. It was a piece of junk by late ‘72 but I got it for $200!

And it got you where you wanted to go.

Yes, after a couple of repairs. We had it for a year before it finally died. At trade in, I got $150 for it😁.

I haven't driven the dial shifter yet, but I'm baffled by all of these comments about how intuitive it is, you don't even have to look at it... I've driven a lot of different shifter styles, both manual and automatic and I've never had to look at the shifter to know what gear I'm shifting into. A lot of times with a manual you need to look how to shift in to reverse when you first get in (and a few have first oddly placed), but when shifting, when would you ever need to look?

Yep, my first was a piece of junk (in '72), I was always working on it but I loved it.
And, I could work on it! Now It's all mysterious and complex under the hood. Tight and unfamiliar. I suppose If I devoted myself to it I would be able to attack it now but I'm probably not gonna.

I personally like the dial shifter... One thing that I like is that if you pull into a driveway and stop and forget to put it in park, when you turn the car off, it automatically puts it into park for you. And I like having open access to the storage area in front of the shifter not having to go around a handle. My 2 cents. A penny for your thoughts. Lol

You’re right. At least a regular person could do several things under the hood. I have a great respect for auto mechanics who know their stuff. I wouldn’t attempt anything beyond checking the oil and filling the windshield washer fluid. 😐

It's all just an electric switch, it could be anything. Knob, stick, buttons on the ceiling.

I like the rotary Ford uses in the mav, and I was upset when I first found out it had one.

I'm used to seeing euro stuff with the rotary and frankly the jags and Rovers that have it are slow to respond, but the mav changes gears immediately.

Start the truck. One click for reverse, or flick for drive. After selecting drive it's 2 clicks for reverse or flick to park, if you bother with it instead of just shutting it off. Very little thought involved and the knob is made to be spun.

You want to use a crappy one? Wait for a jag to pop up, a BMW that has multiple buttons, or an a8 that is just... awful. It was designed by a moron. The Benz column one isn't bad, but it's delicate.
