Short version of history "of woe" : This morning the truck (hybrid) was totally dead. Turning the ignition key had no effect whatsoever. I had earlier received a deep sleep notification but didn't think much of it not knowing what a nightmare it would be. I put a battery charger (~30 years old) onto the charging pins in the engine compartment set for 10 amps. and turned the charger on. The Mav woke up causing a big electrical draw on the charger and then the amp draw dropped off. I left it on the charger because I didn't want to start the truck and leave it running in the alley wear it was parked. About 15 minutes later, I went back and found that the truck went back into deep sleep while connected to the battery charger and was dead. At this point, we think the truck is f'd (how could the Mav go back into deep sleep while on the charger?) so my wife calls uber to go to work. After work she calls the dealer to tow the truck. The tow guy jumps the truck successfully.

So does deep sleep mode allow for the truck to be jumped, but not charged? The manual discusses jumping, but not charging.

If the car goes into deep sleep and won't start, is the only good option to jump start the truck and then drive it around for say 30 minutes or leave it running for 30 minutes?

I use a small charger that works great even when it's in deep sleep but I connect stair to the battery (22 EB).

Get a modern battery charger/maintainer like a NOCO. They are safer and they handle AGM batteries, If you ever decide to upgrade your battery to an AGM.

AGM - Absorbed Glass-Mat.

Basically, the battery acid is absorbed into fiberglass mat material rather than flooding the entire plate area. There is still some lead inside, but it's a much smaller quantity compared to a regular "flooded" lead-acid cell (regular car battery).

Absorbed Glass-Mat (AGM) battery.

AGM batteries are car batteries designed to deliver a lot of amps even when the engine is off.

More than half of new vehicles sold after 2019 require an AGM battery because of their electrical power needs. As of 2022, more than 50 million vehicles on the road require an AGM battery.

AGM means the battery acid inside is absorbed into fiberglass mats instead of sitting as a free-flowing liquid.

This so true! Why Ford does not even have a Motorcraft AGM battery that fits the Mav hybrid???

Get rid of 30 year old tech charger. Purchase a modern preferably with latest tech. Your charger set to 10 amps will make that available at probably 13.1v if it's a float charger higher if it's other. If it detects battery voltage is less than 7v it may not charge because it doesn't think it's a 12v. If you have a smart charger it will treat it like a six volt battery and charge it to 7+ volts and then initiate 12v charging. If a smart charger sees less than 2v it will run that program before initiating 6v routine.
In any case your attempted charger will be seen by the Ford BMS. You would be better off setting your charger to 3-4 amps to lower the over current possibly boiling your electrolyte and shortening your battery life. Your best bet is to run your battery through your dealer and if he says it's good put a good modern maintainer on it every chance you get. I have two maverick hybrids and have the luxury of leaving maintainer on one of mine for a full month if I feel like it. It's more the usage and not the battery. For instance the warranty on a 99.9% pure lead battery with steel case to help contain plate distortion designed for 10 year life is reduced to 3 years for vehicles with start/stop and computer activity.

Thanks for the comments. The next morning (Friday) the truck was in deep sleep but started. Saturday and Sunday the truck did not fall into deep sleep and acted normally. I have bought a jump starter pack in case the truck doesn't start (the 30 year old charger has a 50 A mode for jump starting but you have to be able to plug it into electrical mains) at the supermarket, at work, etc. Getting a battery maintainer is somewhat impractical as my truck is parked outside, but before I go out of town for a whole week, I'll have to figure out how to keep the battery maintained - get a battery maintainer or lend the truck to someone.

I have a solar powered charger, which I forgot about, that can plug into a cigarette lighter socket. Anyone know if the Mav's cigarette lighter is unswitched?

The cigarette style power point is switched with a selectable delay of up to 90 minutes or until the 12v drops to 12.1v. manual says to not charge there. Rig a cigarette style plug to the jump posts under the hood or replace the cig plug with clamps. OR put pos wire from solar charger to battery pos and negative to a body ground, NOT TO BATTERY NEGATIVE POST. I assume your solar "charger" is a smart maintainer type for 12v battery!). There is also the option to disconnect the negative ground from the negative battery post.
