I just read an article today about this very problem and one of the rare elements in the catalytic goes for $16k an ounce and another one $8k!! With prices like that it's easy to see why they are targeted!

They had a problem with GM cats mounted so close to the engine. When they went bad or grenaded, they would throw their insides up into the block.

It’s tucked close to the engine right up against the firewall under the hood. It’s part of the exhaust manifold on the hybrid. They would have a lot of trouble getting that one out. This is a picture of the Hybrid Escape 2.5l which should be almost the same.

We run a general repair shop ond one of the things that gets stolen off the Prius is the exhaust/coolant heat exchanger. The mav has one too so that is what concerns me. The tweekers must think it's part of the cat. Someone cuts a cat that's out in the open you can at least limp home but if they cut the heat exchanger you're not driving anywhere.

I've heard of people spray painting them to make it obvious to a buyer that it was stolen. I think also some states are requiring buyers to be given identifying information on where it was taken from (eg, VIN number).

Because you can take the rare metals out and scrap them for $200. Most places here in Ohio stopped taking them unless your a certified tech.

the turbo model cat is low hanging fruit

Sorry to tell you the Prius cats were being bought at $1600.00.
I buy non stolen cats at garages in the DMV area
when they needed to be replaced.

I'm wondering if anyone knows the location of the catalytic converter on the Maverick. I recently sold my Honda Element because I had 4 catalytic converters stolen off it and I didn't want to spend $400.00 to protect my newly installed cat because I wouldn't have been able to recoup that money when I sold it last week. If the converter is at the bottom of the Maverick unprotected, then there has to be a way to cover it with some sort of plate setup that won't void the warranty.
You bring up a great concern. Here in CA, cc's are stolen regularly. One can purchase different devices for securing them to the frame of your vehicle. I used what's called a CatClamp to secure the cc on my Ford motorhome. Inexpensive (under $200), tough as nails and easy to self-install. I don't know if anyone is making one for the Maverick and not sure if one is necessary due to its location, but if you have any other make of vehicle, I highly recommend putting in some type of protection. Update: according to CatClamp, if you cannot see the converter from underneath the vehicle, then it is too difficult to remove and you don't need protection.

We put a popular brand stainless cat theft deterrent shield under our Prius. It's not foolproof and someone determined will be able to get through, but so far so good.

You're buying time and effort. Most thieves just want easy pickings and will move on. Plenty of unsecured cats out there.

What is the source for this? Can you find A picture of it? This one concerns me.

’Also, I read that some cats use more precious metals than others.

A guy was busted for cc theft near my area, and they found around 2000 converters in his garage. Either he was having a hard time fencing them, or he was saving up for a shipping container.

Ford Maverick Catalytic Converter Location on Maverick? mavacat

Same location for the ecoboost and hybrid for the secondary cat converter. Some here have incorrectly identified it as a resonator which it's not.

Hmm… i hope it doesn’t get a rep for easy money. Maybe since it‘s a second unit, it’s lower in precious metals.
