Am I missing something? wouldn't the water just drain out once the tailgate is closed?
I went out to look at my tailgate and there are a bunch of smaller vent holes next to the big hole

Who says we don’t ship to Ohio? Did you try to order on your phone or iPad?

I have heard from a few people that said they couldn’t order but it has always been a phone or tablet issue with the square site.

I have shipped several to Ohio.
I have the one from Amazon delivering today, but I'm returning it and ordering yours to send to me here in Indiana. I completely forgot you're the OG. That was a close one. Thanks to whoever mentioned this and slapped my brain.

What's the thinking or consensus on vented vs. non-vented? Which one sells better?

Thanks.

Thank you!
I sell more vented than solid but the solid has picked up again.

i think FUD plays a big part in the vented sales. Or the fact that I am the only vented available and you can get lots of solid versions.

Yes, but the drain holes are small and easy to clog. That is why I cover my large tailgate holes. I believe (and many will disagree) that keeping garbage out is more important than venting through the big holes.

This was my biggest fear - loss of camera due to the water/mud and the same for the tailgate lock.
Sure enough........

Toyota has released a technical service bulletin (TSB) for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra pickups to address a condition where paint on the tailgate is bubbling and corroding. This is likely caused by water getting trapped in it. The TSB fixes this problem.

The T-SB-0219-12 is meant for 2007-12 Toyota Tundra showing “a condition where the paint at the bottom seam of the tailgate is bubbling and corrosion is present. In some cases this may be due to water being trapped in the tailgate, and not being able to drain properly,” according to Toyota.

I would venture a guess and advise everybody with a hole cover to remove it before taking it to a dealer for tailgate corrosion warranty repair.
Me? I'm gonna attach a rubber flap under the edge of the tailgate protector to keep debris out when the gate is down and hang open for ventilation when up.
YES on a flap cover! There definitely needs to be ventilation to dry out thoroughly because condensation happens also.

I would recommend pulling the access panel on your tailgate and checking the wiring connector. Sorry that you are having issues with your camera now 😕

I bought the Mabett cover off Amazon for $10 like a few others on this thread. Works great, no complaints, nice tight fit.

Gotta buy those plugs. Currently have Gorilla duct tape covering those holes.
Gotta buy = Agreed and I sprung for the one piece on Amazon. HOWEVER, if somone doesn't want to $pend for a simple piece of black plastic, doesn't have a 3D printer, I suggest what you did. Alternate: Clear, heavy shipping tape works well too and looks decent.

Just a plug for the efforts of @P99Guy and @RichardCranium... I have had both the "Amazon" Mabett versions of this tailgate hole cover, as well as the one fabricated and sold by our local forum member. The one you get from the MTC family is much better IMHO.

In the pic below, the MTC version is on top, and the Mabett version is on bottom.

The Mabett version's passenger-side end tab broke on the first installation attempt. From that point on, that end never held tight. It seemed like the lip that inserts into the smaller hole wasn't a good fit, so I tried trimming some of it. No dice. The ABS, while heat resistant, is too flexible to stay tight to the tailgate, especially missing a tab.

David's version is rigid, has much more "tabbage" and snaps in firmly. It is also larger than the Mabett, so you get a bit more overlap where the plastic/metal meet.

I have an aftermarket SIBL that does not cover that area, so no issues with clearance.

TL;DR if you are happy with the Mabett, that is great. But I think there is a much better option from @P99Guy, AND you can get it vented, or in white. Just my experience...

Thanks for the comparison pictures. The Mabett plug actually looks like some of our first designs. Almost like the file got stolen before we finished prototyping it. The cover is slightly smaller (we enlarged ours a bit from the first design) and the hole for the cables is larger on ours. (Another change we made after prototyping, it wasn’t big enough for some harnesses for some reason.) I may be wrong, but the small hole tabs on the Mabett cover look like they are too far over. Maybe that is the reason for the tabs breaking. It is interesting though, it seems like some people think the Mabett one is great and others have problems with it, but most seem to like the OG cover, and if they dont @P99Guy provides great customer service. I just forget to modify the designs to make them fit on tailgates with spray on bed liner coverage down there.

If it is the Ford Factory SIBL it will not cover that area. Most others may only cover the top section of the opening depending on how it is taped before they spray.

Either way I can get you "covered"

David
@P99Guy
David,
I have a 2024 Lariat on order that comes with a Ford factory SIBL and from these comments I can't tell if you have a modified version that will now fit with the factory SIBL? I don't see multiple versions on the Segarms site. Please respond if your vented cover will fit the factory SIBL and I'll get one ordered. Thx

They all fit fine with the Factory SIBL. I do have a version with longer tabs for aftermarket spray in but have not tested it yet.

it is actually very rare that the spray in installer covers that area. I tend to think it is just lazy worker if they don’t properly tape the spray areas.

rest assured though that if there is any issue I will work to correct it.

My issue is that the camera and latch locks are not waterproof, but water resistant. When I washed my truck bed out and closed the tailgate, I seriously watched what looked like gallons of muddy water pour out. That means all connectors, housings, ect in the tailgate were soaking for several minutes in muddy water.
I'm looking to have a rubber or similar material that I can attach to the bottom of the tailgate that will coverall the holes in the bottom of the tailgate and divert 99% of the water with the gate down and uncover the holes with the gate up. Seems like the best way to protect the tailgate to me.
