I had never owned a car with auto high beams before and I like it. All mavericks have the auto high beams.
I don’t know where the sensor is but when there is no oncoming traffic or streetlights the high beams come on. If a car with it’s lights on is coming toward you they revert to low beams. If there is street lighting or businesses have lighting etc the high beams stay off.
I’ve never yet found them to be on when inappropriate and often they turn on when I wouldn’t have but probably should have.
This! Mine do a great job of transitioning back and forth. I don’t even think about them at this point and that’s a good thing.

I haven't driven at night much on open roads yet. The few times I did I noticed the high beams coming on when there was no one in front of me... popping off when a car was coming around the corner towards me. Worked great. There are a few patches on that road where critters like to run across. I'd rather be able to get a little warning so I can avoid them.
Our 2018 Honda Crv has them and, likewise, I think they work great - better than I expected. They switch about the time I would switch them myself.

Was the Mazda infuriating? We had a 2014 3 and a 2018 MX-5 and they were by far the most annoying in terms of being unable to decide between high and low beam.

My favorite system was our 2016 E-class.. we paid to have the European features unlocked, so the car had adaptive beams. It would shade out cars around you while still running high beams. It was awesome.
I have this feature coded in my BMW M5, I love it. I wish the US government would allow US cars to have it. My M5 has adaptive headlights too, which turn with the steering wheel. Nice when going around turns at night

The Mazda is a 2020 and they must have resolved those issues because it's not bad at all but not quite the level of Ford's system.

Fun fact, with the new infrastructure bill passed, adaptive/digital matrix headlight systems are now FINALLY legal in the US.
adaptive headlights have been legal in the US, what the infrastructure bill allows is HIgh Been Assist. I have it coded in my M5 and it works so well. My M5 has it's high beams (LED) on most of the time and it does not blind other drivers. Here is a video

I don't do a lot of driving at night but, I did last night and my mind went to the Maverick of course. I believe my XLT comes with auto high beams. How does that work exactly? Do they go off at a certain distance from an oncoming vehicle? Do they go on after a certain interval in the dark where no other lights are present?
I can only speak for my Prius (so far), but I do a lot of driving on highways at night, and I use automatic high beams. On my car, they're turned on by pushing the left stem behind the steering wheel forward toward the windshield until it clicks into place. (If I want to manually use the high beams, I pull the stem toward me until it clicks into place).

Once they're turned on, they magically detect lights in front of me a pretty good distance away - at least 300-400 yards on a straight stretch. It's all really seamless. But, if I'm on a late night curvy two-lane road with irregular oncoming traffic, I often flick the auto headlights off because it doesn't always detect a car coming around a sharp curve as fast as I do, and I don't want to blind the other driver.

I would assume Maverick's auto brights work similarly.

Kind of.....There have been certain aspect of adaptive lighting that are allowed (like the one you referenced) but true Adaptive Driving Beams (Audi calls this Digital Matrix) actually eliminates high beams altogether. There no differentiation between high and low, which was prohibited until now.

From the look of the switch, your choice is auto (with auto highbeam) or manual ON, which would mean the lights run all the time. This is the same setup as both our Genesis and Kia.

What I don't know is if you can disable the AHB in the systems settings. The Genesis and Kia do not have that option.
According to the manual you can disable through the control screen.

My wife's 2014 Explorer has them and they are great.

I had a 1967 Cadillac that had auto dimming, system was very simple, on-off & a near-far sensing adjuster, worked great. My 73 also has it, but doesn't work.

Ok. Leaving and coming home lighting... Gimmick.

The stuff on the highway, though. Looks awesome. Almost makes it look like driving in Forza horizon 4 (video game)

Our family had a 56 Caddy with that! It was a sensor on the dash on the far left. It never worked well. If road was hilly it would go back and forth between high and low with oncoming cars and dad got really tired of that and disconnected it.

The best part about "true Adaptive Driving Beams " - the headlights themselves ? $8000 per to replace if it goes out or is damaged. That doesn't include the controller which I didn't get a price on. One more reason - one wreck and a vehicle is totaled due to sensors, cameras, air bag deployment or wiring just to name a few.

I drove home the other night. 12 hour drive. Those hi beams went off and on constantly. Every time another car came toward me. So so obnoxious. I need to get that auto on crap turned off. I will turn them on if I ever need them. I see someone posted how to turn them off. Wish me luck.

I turned the auto feature on mine off. At $1200 for a new headlight (can't replace the individual bulbs, super sustainable!) I will just toggle when needed.

If you ever watch a bulb blow, it always happens on power up. The constant power cycling of high beams is going to kill the lights extremely quickly. I watched a car in front of me cycle about every 5-10 secs as they were driving down the road. I cringed for the LED controller.
