Anyone switch to 235/65r17 size tires?

Hello, checking to see what everyone's input is on switching to 235/65r17 tires? Particularly the Firestone Destination AT's? Love my Maverick and the 225 Continentals are fine, but I do like the way the 235's look a little beefier. Don't think I want to go all the way to 245 just yet, maybe next go around.

Funny you would ask the question I logged to ask.
I'm approaching tire replacements and am leaning towards the 235's to get a higher load rating.
It's currently a toss up between the Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT's and the Falken Wildpeak AT4W's.
Do I need the extra capacity for load? Not really. I have an issue with tires that will just handle Max capacity and the extra room won't hurt. The sidewalls are heavier on 235's so I expect a slightly stiffer ride.
Anyone gone to 235's and willing to share your thoughts??

I went 235/70-17 in that exact tire and have been very happy with it.

Road noise is increased a little bit, but certainly far from unbearable. I was expecting to have a little more road noise. Impact on MPG has been small, ~2 MPG. Have driven in sand, mud, rain, and snow; these tires haven't missed a beat.

I did and love them! I lost maybe 1 mpg. In my opinion they are the best light weight AT tire.

I made the switch to 235/65-17 tires about 6 weeks ago on my 25 EB. I tow occasionally and wanted a better quality tire. I don’t off-road so I went with a Cooper Pro Contact tire. Definitely quieter than the stock Continentals and the handling is improved, plus I like the look. I will say I probably lost a mile or two in fuel mileage with the additional tire weight, but I’m definitely pleased with these tires.

I just got 235/65/17 last week on my hybrid bf good rich T/A I love it so far.

If your focus is cosmetic appearance, I think you would get more value by swapping your current tires onto a wider aftermarket wheel.

But yes, I have 235/65-17's (BFG Trail Terrain T/A).
I'm down 1-2 MPG. FWD Hybrid, 90% freeway. 33-34 MPG on the dash.
I'd recommend you find a tire that is similar weight to OEM. Heavy tires rob power and MPG.

A little more clearance up front will be nice, even if it is just .5 inch or so. I also travel on some occasional farm gravel/dirt roads, nothing too crazy though.

I’m in the same boat- I’d love to go to 235 70 for the extra .5” clearance and a more truck look. Can only get destination at2 in my area in that size. Seems like a decent tire. But 235 65 there’s A LOT more choice, including the cheaper and better Nokian NAT. Given I’m not picking my truck up until late September I’ll follow this thread!

I would not recommend AT4W’s if you care about economy. They are a beast of a tire with 3 peak snow rating, impenetrable sidewalls and chunky tread lugs that get great traction in the most challenging off-road settings.

But they are really heavy and your mileage will suffer.

I've been thinking about doing this as well.
My question for the experts revolve around the circumference of these various tires. I think in one of Matmondro's posts he stated he couldn't change the settings greater than 2270mm circumference with forscan. Looking at tire size calculators it seems that even my stock 225/65 17's are listed at 2273 mm. So how do you get the BCM in line with the tire size especially since the 235/65 17's are listed as 2314 mm. Even the 225/60 18 tires fall outside of max circumference 2283mm. Maybe I'm missing something or the tire calculator I used is off??? Or do most folks just go to 2270 and call it good even if it's off a couple mph.

Just like in the old days, before there was Forscan, just put bigger tires on and go.

Your tire size calculator is what is giving you the headache. I’m running 255/65/17 wildpeak’s. They show 708 revs per mile, which equates to 7.45 feet circumference, or 2,273 mm.

Stock FX4 pirelli scorpion ATR’s in 225/65/17 show 729 revs per mile, which is 2,207 mm

Stock Tremor wild peak AT3W’s show 721 revs per mile, which is 2,232 mm.

If you go to 235/65/17 and don’t change your tire diameter in forscan, it will read 1.1% slower than it should, which translates to reading 74 mph when it should be reading 75 mph.
