I'm used to it now after 3 months. I spent the first week looking for the shifter to rest my right hand. Yesterday something weird happened. I got in and connected my phone via cable, set it down on the console then put the key in and turned to start. Nothing. I thought "o crap, warranty call". Then I noticed a warning on the dash saying to put it in park. Don't know how, with the key off, I could possibly knock it out of park. Next time I drive it I'll try to figure out how that happens.

What I would really like is a six speed manual hooked to the 2.0 turbo but I'd probably go through front tires twice a year.

What do you mean it does not stop spinning? I do not have mine yet so this concerns me. That is a feature of why I chose the Mav!
The dial will spin freely forever, but it bottoms out on whatever end you spin towards. It doesn't go all the way round to the other side. It's really not a big deal, and your gear is displayed in the instrument cluster so whatever.

My lord......the group of people who probably complain about the youth not being able to drive a manual are complaining about driving a automatic.....

Oh how the turns have tabled!

It isn’t smart like some of the luxury brands’ rotary knobs. They will not allow you to turn past a given menu or selection. So once you get to the farthest right selection (in this case, Drive), the knob will not allow you to turn it further. This is how my Ram was. It allows you to operate the dial without looking after you are used to it.

I expected the Maverick to function the same, but the dial allows you to keep rotating it to the right even after you have reached Drive. So you can’t just rotate it by touch and feel what the transmission is in. I have to look down to ensure I’m in D or R like I want when pulling in and out of spots.

On that note tho, i wish the drive mode buttons weren’t right by the shifter…. I have little dogs and when they’re in the car they like to change drive modes, turn on auto-stop start, etc…
Might need safety covers over those buttons because of our pets not playing along with our plans.
Great possibilities for the 3D printer innovators.

I suspected that it would be a gimmick, so I wasn’t sure that I would like it.

But I’ve grown to not dislike it.

I do miss the tactile feedback of reaching over to check which gear I’m in without having to look. Not a big deal though, just something that the dial lacks. I wish that it had a little nub or something for physical feedback.
This sums up my experience as well. I’d only add that the dial is kind of an interesting change of pace. Has a more minimal feel that is not entirely unpleasant. I’ve grown to totally accept it I think.

I worked at a Toyota dealership and have driven many used vehicles with similar rotary shifters such as countless Ram 1500s, a Chrysler 300, and a Ford Fusion. I don't mind at all. There's no learning curve, it just feels natural. It cleans up the center console and I like the instantaneous feedback through gears since it's fully electronic. I hate mechanical transmissions that clunk into gear (i.e., my Tacoma) although it's a good indicator that you definitely put it in gear but it's a very unrefined feeling. To me, there's no having to look down to see what gear you're in. It's the exact same gear pattern. The only difference is twisting it from left-right or vice versa. Also like any other car, the gauge cluster will more than likely display which gear you're in if you don't look at the shifter. So overall, I don't mind one bit. On a side note, Honda's push-button transmissions are even cooler in my opinion.

i would like to ask all, does anyone like the diel shift. i personally do not like it. so I am on a mission to see if there is a way to put a hand held shift like an f150. does anyone agree. thank you
The shifter is designed to create an illusion of more space in the cabin by eliminating the imposition of a staff shifter. I like it.

I wasn't real enthused about it at first but I've grown to like it now. Last weekend I was installing my Sirius/XM radio and was crawling back and forth and leaning over the console and I was thankful there wasn't a lever sticking up. Also nice for leaning over the passenger seat or floor to reach something although in Park that may not be an issue.

I drive 30 miles to work every day, park. At the end of the day, reverse, drive the same 30 miles home, park. Saturdays I do the same to play with my birds…that is about 30 seconds a week interacting with the shifter.
Don’t have one yet, don’t think it will bother me much.

Why don't you just look at the gauge cluster and see what gear you're in? You don't have to look down at all.

And it just so happens my 3D printer got here yesterday (and of course I ran into issues, because at this point which of my upgrades/projects isn’t running into an issue (usually wiring/electrical related)…. My first test print is finally up and running 🕺🏽
