I honestly cant believe modern non-manual vehicles still come with "sticks" of any kind... be it column or console mounted. There is no need anymore. Push-button, "Porsche/Audi group chicken nugget nubs", rotary dials etc. all save space and really modernize the cabin IMO.

I had Ricky Bobby syndrome the first few weeks not knowing what to do with my right hand while driving :ROFLMAO:

I actually have grown very comfortable with it and enjoy the space it saves in the center console in general.

Overall not a big deal to me, but the dainty little dial in the center looks like it would be more at home in a little Lexus or Audi crossover. In a truck (even a small one) it seems out of place. If it must be a dial how about mounting it on the side of the steering column. Or a stalk that rotates like windshield wiper controls, except bigger and resembling a motorcycle throttle. 🙂 Those would be more appealing options, IMO.
This dainty lil beaut says, "Hi there!" Last thing i need is another thing sticking out behind my wheel. Less is more - i just need that area clean and free for oppo-lock action
Kidding aside - I can see how some dont like it. I love the thing.

Good discussion. I'm used to the dial now and don't mind it at all. I have had the situation where I moved forward thinking I've been in park or reverse. However, the more I get used to it, that issue is diminishing! Regarding the dogs, I have 2 but they are kept in the back seat securely buckled in.

Nice ride! I wouldn't want another stalk on my Mustang GT, either. But that thing looks out of place on those badass cars, too. A cylinder that sticks up higher and fits in your hand (but still rotates like a dial to select) would look better and be easier to grip, imo.

Not a fan because I’ve had a shift lever for past 49 years. Really just miss it as a hand rest and sometimes I put in the wrong position for some reason.

That sounds like a crazy ass safety feature as I regularly drive with my doors open(for parking position while hooking up things or loading things). Anyways its all electric, there does not have to be any different safety feature changes. It would stay in place, you just click it up to shift one way, and down to shift the other way. Zero difference in the way it works from the dial. It would also use the same mechanical action as the turn signal on the other side of the column so the parts could be interchangable. Any buttons on the shifter dial could be replaced with the stalk operating like the multifunction wiper stalk.

Also all of it would be better/safer(hands on wheel) as a button on the wheel. Since it wont let you shift where it could cause damage or danger anyway because of the programming.
Okay but that's what they make the rear view camera for. It even has a line designating where you're receiver is and you can change the view so it's looking down on the trailer tongue too. I'm not going to pretend that I know what's best for Ford and their designers, this is a parts bin truck made from parts that are interchangeable on low end Ford models. I'm going to assume it's a money thing. People think it's free reign and money when designing something but ultimately it's the bean counters who dictate things, especially on a 20k truck.

Oh I know the cameras are useful, though we do not get 360 camera view on the Maverick. I had to jump start a car for someone the other day that required me to move within 1/2" of their car for the cables to reach the front I was angled in at the front fender and the front bumper to fit in the corner between their car and the one next to them. A camera would not have helped me see my own bodywork and how close it was to theirs.

But my needs of a vehicle are not common among most commuter/drivers.

About the shifter I see no reason why the next innovative shift mechanism design wont go to the wheel or column. It started on the column(post war modern mass production aesthetic design era), then moved to the console/floor, and logically and for safety I think where your hands already are is the next logical step.

We will see. I still think anybody that doesnt know what to do with their right hand should put it on their spouses leg or their own "junk".

Only drove a dial shift in a rental=no like. Seemed I had to look at dial to see selector position. Regular shifter you know by feel. No looking. No feeling in dial.
Seems tricky to put a manual shift mode with a dial shifter??

Paddles??? Mavericks are not F1 cars.

Didn't like it at first, but now it is fine. Occasionally I am not in gear I intended to be in, but rarely after 4 months of use.
