Received oil sample report #3 with the truck now 5,000+ miles. Overall the report has good numbers. Except for viscosity. Like other reports the viscosity low. Reports, samples of all, reveal no evident of fuel dilution nor water, antifreeze. That on Motorcraft 5W-30 blend lube oil. That is concerning. Wondering specs of the blend vs the full synthetic version. I looked up the published specs of both oils, and strangely both oils have similar viscosity values! Looking at others oil, like Pennzoil full synthetic, their viscosity number higher than Motorcraft (ConocoPhillips). Blackstone suggested the viscosity not a big concern.

With the hot summer coming up soon, and the truck could use an oil change within next 12-1300 miLes, debating the choice of oil. One thing for sure, if I stick with Motorcraft, will switch to full synthetic, and prep another oil sample with ~2,500 miles posted on it. Or should I use a different brand, like Pennzoil or Mobil 1.

Ive seen where Motorcraft has a 10W-30 variety but not see if this oil approved by Ford in the 2.0 EB engine, per WSS-M2C961-A1. Only the 5W-30 is recognized, from what I could ascertain.

I've been using the Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-30 every 5,000 miles since new considering that is the oil that is recommended in the owners manual. I now have almost 27,000 miles and the engine uses practically no oil between oil changes. Usually still clean looking. I will most likely switch over to full synthetic on next oil change because I feel it is better for turbo engines.

Did you ever get sample analysis?
per Motorcraft specs, viscosity noted as 10.2. My 5W-30 blend samples 1 to 3 readings were 8.2, 7.9 and last 7.2. The first one was factory oil at time delivered with the truck. Last 2 were changed at Ford dealers Quick Change operation. My wife Escape also changed there, and its last sample reveals low viscosity as well. Maybe I need to grill this dealer further.

That's a good question actually. Perhaps the dealer put in 5W-20, or in general just something that wasn't 5W-30?

Thanks, I'm always interested in others' oil analyses. So that oil had 5000 miles on it?

The drop in viscosity is normal over time. All oils will meet the initial published spec, but will break down from use. It's not so much getting diluted by a contaminate, the properties of the oil and it's additives are changing and getting thinner.

I'd expect any full synthetic would break down more slowly than it's blended version.

Run whatever meets the required spec (I use what is cheap and available that meets my hybrid spec - engine doesn't know how much the oil cost).

Understand your viewpoint. I do however use local Ford dealer Quick Change site for oil change. Easy for me. But I have to question them over what oil they really use. It may be bulk, but regardless, need to know. Blackstone suggest getting sample of the oil dealer use, they can run a sample it to verify.

Yes, last sample close to 5k miles. Realize oil viscosity could change when used, aged. The Blackstone report saying some searing, but no evidence of gasoline, and stated nothing to fret over. Humm…searing with low viscosity? I don’t think so. I kinda want to go to 10W-30 oil. Hot summers here with turbo, really need heavier oil, IMHO. Motorcraft has GF-6 10W-30 oil but not recommended by Ford with their WW#-961-A1 series. I think they pushing this 5W-30 because of reduced fuel consumption issue. Me not care of any EPA rated MPG bs, but want good engine protection.

But first I need to find what dealer is using.

What did Blackstone measure the viscosity as? Ford datasheet lists the following:

Viscosity:
cSt @100°C 11.0
cSt @ 40°C 68
cP @ -30°C 5500

Viscosity Index 160

Product Data Sheet 5W30 Synthetic Blend

Curious how much it degraded from new, or is the Ford WSS-M2C961-A1 spec intentionally lower than the typical 5W-30 for fuel economy or other.

I would use a known high quality synthetic like Pennzoil Ultra Plat 5w30 before upping the grade IMO. Run the test after that for 5k and see where you end up.

SUS Viscosity @ 210°F-50.7 Should be 56-63
cSt Viscosity @ 100°C- 7.47 Should be 9.1-11.3
Flashpoint in °F - 410 Should be >385
Fuel %- <0.5 Should be <2.0
Antifreeze % - 0.0
Water % - 0.0
Insolubles % - 0.1 Should be <0.6

This for syn blend Motorcraft oil

Product Data Sheet 5W30 Synthetic Blend

Blackstone # per last sample report:
Mileage on oil sample - 3,720
Viscosity:
SUS viscosity @ 210 deg F - 50.7 (normal range, 56-63)
cSt @100°C - 7.47 (normal range, 9.1-11.3)
Flashpoint in deg F - 410 (nominal >385)
fuel% - 0.0 (nominal <2.0)
antifreeze % - 0.0
Water % - 0.0

Note: My concern is oil high temperature since in hotter ambient, not very cold in southern Texas. This truck rated 4,000# towing, has oil cooler. Hence hot vs. cold ambients, hotter oil is the issue.[/QUOTE]

If the Ford Quick Change operation would allow me to bring the Pennzoil, they change, I prob would try. I cannot change my oil anymore. If I got down, tough to get up. Age creep! I have all the tools…floor jack, stands, drain pan, tools, filter removal tool, funnels, etc.

Gotcha, maybe call around to an independent shop. It might be a little more money but you'll have better oil in the vehicle.
