I just took my truck to the dealership for an oil change and tire rotation, but they had super long list of things they wanted to check that ended up being over $400.00. My truck just reached 20,000 miles and I only drive it to work and back. Should I trust them seeing that my truck is still kind of new?

What are the services they recommended? Is it preventative or fixing things? In my opinion, I'd probably have the services performed because $400 is not a huge expense these days for car fixes. However, I'd just check online or another mechanic if the rates they quote you are appropriate for what they plan to do.

I always think preventative maintenance is good to avoid bigger issues down the line. Or, if it's something that is broken, it's better to get it fixed than let it fester and create more problems.

Thank you for the Quick response. It was things like system flushes, under carege inspection, checking for break dust around the rotors and checking engine for anything out of order. It just seemed a little out of place to me for a truck that just reached 20,000 miles, but I do understand what you are saying about preventive maintenance. I'll do a little at a time so it won't destroy my pockets.🤣 Thank you for your input and have a great day my friend.🙏🏾

That sounds like the list that Ford published. As long as they don't charge crackhead prices, it's cheap maintenance and peace of mind to keep it in good condition.

RIP OFF! Designed to generate additional dealership profit. And odds are they won't actually do anything other than pencil whip the extra items on that list.

32,000 trouble free miles on my Maverick. Regular dealership service. They do everything on the Ford service schedule. And they send me a short video clip of the tech inspecting each item on my vehicle. Tire depth, brake pads, leaks, etc. All video documented. Every visit. And it costs $110, including tire rotation. Oh, and it's done in my driveway for no extra charge.

23,000 Mi Runs like a clock never been back to the dealer and probably won't til I finally do the recalls. Been doing this for years and by not doing warranty's I saved enough to to almost buy a new vehicle. At least you guys are good for the economy.:like:

Curious what was the list of things? 31k on our maverick and dealer oil changes with nothing besides the oil change. The last one they showed me my air filter and asked if I wanted a new one.i said no id just blow it out with compressed air. I also said no to the tire rotations and the " cabin" air filter.

One maintenance item that often seems overlooked is the brake fluid. DOT3 and DOT4 absorb water from the atmosphere and distribute it throughout the service brake system. If you ignore it too long, it will corrode expensive parts and do a LOT of damage long before the color starts to change. I believe the brake controller in hybrids (or ABS in EBs) is not serviceable so an ounce of prevention here may be worth 100 lbs of cure. Where I live, I need to flush my fluid every 3 years. The $5 testers that use electric conductivity are imperfect but good enough to tell you what you need to know.

Did not know this. I've never replaced the brake fluid in my antique cuda in 34 years.brakes work fine.

Watch them. Should “learn” everything about vehicle maintenance aspects, and use good judgement.
Ex: On my old F250 dealer service writer wanted to change rear end fluid. Asked why. Saying Ford recommended. I countered my rear end Sterling unit, SWD. On the Dana dual wheel drives, it is suggested to change lube oil at 40k miLes. On SWD Ford says lifetime, as long not contaminated. Had him look up on his computer. Dude learned something for the day. Not nice to try fool an educated customer!

Did you get an itemized list of what they did? It's most likely a complete ripoff. Anything marked as a "check", is just BS. There is no scheduled system flush at 20K. If you have an AWD, it's a good idea to change the PTU & RDU fluid, but I guarantee they did not do that. You basically got a $400 oil change. If you did not get an itemized list of service items, I would go back and raise hell, and ask for a refund. That's a shady practice at best, and NOT in your best interest. Find a new dealer.

You are blessed, my son; God is watching over you. That coffee color in your brake fluid is rust from the steel brake lines that only appears after the copper lining is already gone. I had a 72 Maverick (yeah, the car) with similar maintenance that had total failure of the service brakes at the 15-year mark from corrosion pitting of the cast iron master cylinder bore (tore up the piston seals). Everything worked great until it didn't. Back then, you could get a reman MC for about $10, of course, so the fix was cheap if you survived the trip. God watched over me too that day. Since then, I try not to push my luck so much.
Keep your 'cuda parking brake in good shape. You never know...

57,000 miles on my previous Bronco sport. Dealer serviced. Each and every service was $79 plus tax with full synthetic.
When more things needed checking they did that without charging more.

Your dealer needs to explain themselves to your satisfaction.
If they can’t you got robbed.

I think the advice that you are getting, although somewhat mixed, are good to keep in mind. I will add my personal feeling, and it is yes, the cost is reasonable but unnecessary service is a waste of money. If you can look up in your owners manual and see what Ford says should be done at service intervals is the better way to go. I bought a brand new Hyundai SUV that came with lifetime oil changes but starting with the second service, the advisor tried to upsell things like motor flush, fuel injector cleaning etc. I asked that they only perform what the factory said was needed to not violate the cars warranty and almost every up sale item was not stated to be done so I didn't approve them. The service writer was a bit pushy, but I held my ground and had close to 100K trouble free miles when I sold it to my brother.
