Thank you. That all aligns with what the Ford tech told me, too. This is my first hybrid and I'm now stuck in a catch-22... for exactly what you just said: I purposely bought it for the short, in-town trips we make.

Sounds like you really needed an old Nissan Leaf EV for putting around town. You bought an ICE vehicle. Put it in sport mode and get out on the open road every month. Cars like to be driven. Never runs better than after a long road trip.

2023 Hybrid, Toronto Canada
Took delivery Aug 2023, now (Nov) has 5000km / 3000mi. Weather has turned colder.

Decided I would do an early [first] oil change and found this under the filler cap.

I know this indicates moisture in the engine. But I also know: - the coolant level hasn't changed
- no white smoke out the tail pipe
- no rough starts
- the oil that I drained out was NOT cloudy or foamy or light colored.

Admitedly the truck is used mostly for very short trips and the engine rarely warms to full operating temp.

Have any of you (in a colder climate), driving short trips, experienced this on their Hybrid Maverick?

Could this be a pcv thing?

I've owned a dozen cars in the Toronto area over several decades and never experienced this... even when some of those cars were used I'm the same way for short trips.

I'll see what the dealer says and report back.

No. I had checked the oil a few times in 3 months... but never bothered to open the oil fill cap till the day I changed the oil. I'll keep an eye on it. As many have suggested.. I just need to drive it more than to get groceries.

I had an '81 Toyota pickup that had that emulsion under the cap every time I looked for twenty-five years. Never knew what caused it, but it didn't' seem to be an issue. Also had a '67 VW Beetle that had a crankcase vent tube that collected the stuff. Had to blow it out every few weeks....but it ran forever.
For the record, my hybrid doesn't have it....but I don't do a lot of short trips....I will bet that's it.

However, my drive is 45 minutes each way, so I would assume it gets up to temp regularly.

I have a 35 - 45 min drive each direction. San Francisco Bay area. Mild. Cool. But mild. 40's to 80's usually.

My hybrid in the city won't get past 155°F in summer. Sometimes not past 140°F in winter.

I just checked my cap. Not full, but there is a trace amount. Less than 2000 miles since oil change.

Yeah. That seems like it wouldn't be hot enough. Need to check my actual temps. I have about 8 minutes in a stretch on the interstate.

With only 200 miles I can see condensation beginning inside my cap . Wiped it off and check it again sometime

The last time I saw gunk like that, it was from Pennzoil. More wax than oil in that stuff.

Pennzoil Ultra Platinum is great oil. But ok.

Changed my oil at just under 3k on Saturday for the first time, and also had some mayonnaise or pudding looking deposits under the cap, as well as some in the up-tube. It's been cool here, and I rarely have more than 2 bars on the temp gauge.

Looks like a change before super cold weather, and one early spring will be in my routine, and/or I need to take a weekly drive long enough to heat up the engine sufficiently enough to burn it off.

Thank you. Good to compare from around the continent. I've checked my fill cap a few times since my original post and haven't seen it as bad again. I wonder if a good, long run "dissolves" (or re-incorporates?) the gunk... and then it just accumulates again with the short trips. I ain't no chemist tho.

I figure it melts and reforms. Like butter maybe.

Certain engines, like the Mopar 4.7 V8's, have a tendency to do this in the winter. In fact, on those engines they actually revised the oil fill tube with a baffle in it to keep that stuff from coming up to the top where it is visible. If everything else checks out ok, it's probably fine and just the nature of short trips and not warming up enough.
