My last vehicle being a whisper quiet, port injection, Acura V6 the first time I cold started my brand new Maverick I just about had a heart attack. I thought the valve train was self destructing. I was ready to drive straight back to the dealership and make a fool of myself. Luckily I remembered one of the many dozens of reviews I read and watched mentioned a “slight” injector noise. I did a lot more reading and figured I was hearing normal direct injection racket. I never noticed it on any test drives but I think the sales rep had always warmed up the engine beforehand. I found a very few reviews that even mentioned the high pressure fuel pump as being exceptionally noisy. I guess it bothers some people more than others.
Long story short. I did take it back to the dealership and they agreed it did seem to be louder than usual. They replaced the HPFP as a warranty item but the noise level was about the same. I wish I had thought to ask them to replace the cam follower.

I thought I would share my partial solution to my non problem, problem for anyone else bothered by the God awful racket the 2.0 ecoboost makes. It still sounds like an industrial sewing machine but it no longer makes my stomach drop on cold starts.

The engine cover, of course, was first. That took the edge off. Then I added the Maxzina hood mat which made little to no difference on its own but I added a self adhesive 1/4” thick closed cell foam backing cut to match the mat and additional fastening points. That took the sound down a little more A word of warning about the hood mat. DO NOT USE the supplied fasteners for the bottom left and right attachment points. THEY ARE TOO LONG and will push through the top of the hood. I found out the hard way and it cost me $150 for PDR. I haven’t seen this anywhere before but I added a cowl insulation pad from the Bronco Sport sound isolation package. I had to drill four small holes to attach it with plastic rivets. I think it looks good like it belongs. Pictures below. Not pictured are the fender insulation pads on both sides and the “energy absorber” that goes above them. I will probably add closed cell foam to the back of the cowl insulation
at some point. I have spent a stupid amount of time and money trying to hush up the direct injection system which I attribute to my initial trauma. I can provide more details if anyone is interested. Thanks for letting me share!

What noise? Mine purrs unless I'm outside of the vehicle than I can hear what the OP. Of course I'm getting hard of hearing, so that maybe a contributing factor.

At least you have a sense of humor about it. Very thorough, as well. Nice work.

My old 2002 F250 Super Duty with the IH 7.3 liter diesel makes noise, a lot of noise. I often have to check the Tach to determine if the Maverick 2.0 EB is running. It makes a noise? I wasn't aware, but I wear hearing aids so maybe I have it tuned out of my sound spectrum.

I was honestly wondering about this possibility lol. That being said I have always been hyper aware of engine/vehicle noises while driving. If I am driving alone in a vehicle for an extended period of time I will turn off the radio and hvac and just listen intently to every little noise. Not exactly a healthy state of mind lol. So the direct inject chatter sent me into an instant state of fight or flight. I should probably talk to a therapist about that lol.

I would relate the sound to an old... "Teletype". (TTY).
But, ONLY when the hood is raised and the engine is COLD..

Otherwise, I have to check (the tach, also) to make sure it is STILL running... :ROFLMAO:
(mine is just under 13,000 miles on the OD..)
Inside, I can't hear it nor can I FEEL IT... My past Rangers, were NOT this Smooth-Operators... ;)

One other thing to try if the noise still bothers you is check to see if you have the fender insulation. They are relatively inexpensive and some members swear they make a difference. Yes I also agree that the injector pump is a little noisy. Especially on cold starts.

Anyway, here's a link to the big thread about the fender insulation.
https://www.mavericktruckclub.com/forum/threads/no-insulation-at-fender-to-engine.11244/
Thanks, I did add the fender wall insulation. At this point the noise levels are tolerable for me. The main thing I wanted to highlight was the wiper cowl insulator from the Bronco Sport which I hadn't seen mentioned before. It was only $55 shipped from ford. It seemed to cut down on the noise coming through the windshield. https://parts.ford.com/shop/en/us/b...d-parts-front/dash-panel-insulator-13284343-1
The only other thing I might try is the acoustic windshield if I ever need to replace mine. Thanks for all the replies.

The sewing machine sound is a very accurate description.

I have somewhat young ears and it still took a while for me to realize the Maverick was actually running after daily driving a 7.3. The 2.0 EB is a noisy engine, but not like a 13 letter manure spreader!
