The days of manuals getting significantly better gas mileage is gone. Even the last bastion of manual transmissions. Europe is selling more automatics than manual transmissions.
90% of semi tractors are sold with automatic transmissions.

Not really. More gears. Better gear for the conditions more efficient.
It's taken a lot of years but we finally got there.

Looks like Toyota has been missing the mark lately! Poor gas mileage and high prices may mean poor sales. I have read that other Toyota models have problems, also.

if you have ever been off road (or on) with a dead battery you can still push start a truck.

I had an '09 Taco for a number of years...it was reliable as all getout but drove like a friggin' tractor. Incredible resell too; I bought it with 100K miles, drove it 4 years and put another 100K on it and sold it for essentially the same money.

Then why is the Taco the only manual transmission truck for sale today in Canada and the US? It's basically dead from a buyers perspective. Off roading is not the be all and end all of existence, and just an over hyped niche.
