Nissan having bigger problems these days and even throwing out a suggestion to Honda, to buy shares in the their mutual EV collaboration. Also, having to compete with Chinese EV's internationally is not easy. You are correct, Nissan needs to find market share with some new, affordable vehicles that people actually want. (maybe they are over invested in the EV market, just look at Ford). I have owned a few of the old school "Datsun's in my day that were affordable, dependable and inexpensive. Maybe they should ramp up a small Maverick type truck. They need to come up with something as they appear about "broke".
I think trucks that are at or above 10,000lbs GVW (so your F-250s and above) are exempt from CAFE regulations. But vehicles like the Ranger Raptor and Expedition Tremor are classified separately from their mainline counterparts, so the Maverick likely plays a part in allowing those vehicles to market.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance didn't seem to do much besides entrench Mitsubishi as a pretty low rent brand offering sub-par cars to buyers with poor credit, and drag down Nissan to that level too.
I tend to agree with this, but have never seen any evidence to back it up.
