Here’s kind of a weird take: the Ford Maverick is embarrassing.

I've had some neighbors make some snide comments about my Maverick. I think it's rooted in jealousy. Sure, it doesn't come close to their full size trucks' capacities. But like most, they hardly ever use them. I think what irritates them most is I have 2 brand new vehicles, one being a truck and another being a sports car, and those total MSRPs together are right around the single MSRPs of their trucks alone.

Not really a lot of content on this article, but having just returned from a week long trip to mostly rural Mexico where cheap, mostly regular cab, mostly manual transmissions, and newer ones unibody pickups are EVERYWHERE, the answer is the market for those vehicles in America is not as large as you would think. GM / Stellantis / Toyota also have incentive to not lose sales on their more profitable full size trucks to a lower profit vehicle (Ford gambling on the Maverick is still an interesting decision to me).

I am surprised though that Nissan has not jumped in with something since they could use sales, well, anywhere, any way. Will be interesting to see if another automaker in Japan jumps in and tries to reinvigorate Nissan with better vehicles that are more aligned with what people want and can afford.
Nissan having bigger problems these days and even throwing out a suggestion to Honda, to buy shares in the their mutual EV collaboration. Also, having to compete with Chinese EV's internationally is not easy. You are correct, Nissan needs to find market share with some new, affordable vehicles that people actually want. (maybe they are over invested in the EV market, just look at Ford). I have owned a few of the old school "Datsun's in my day that were affordable, dependable and inexpensive. Maybe they should ramp up a small Maverick type truck. They need to come up with something as they appear about "broke".

Ford made the Maverick to keep their EPA fleet numbers in such a way that they can sell more F-150s and heavy duty trucks. A lot of other automakers still sell cars, which solves that problem for them.
I think trucks that are at or above 10,000lbs GVW (so your F-250s and above) are exempt from CAFE regulations. But vehicles like the Ranger Raptor and Expedition Tremor are classified separately from their mainline counterparts, so the Maverick likely plays a part in allowing those vehicles to market.

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance didn't seem to do much besides entrench Mitsubishi as a pretty low rent brand offering sub-par cars to buyers with poor credit, and drag down Nissan to that level too.

I guess for that matter Mitsubishi not taking a stab at some sort of pickup on the CMF platform instead of another Outlander no one asked for, or the wildly outdated and bad Eclipse Cross is also interesting.

Never heard of this site before, and after reading 10 out of 20 of these "embarrassing car" descriptions, I can see that I've been heretofore blessed in my ignorance.

I tend to agree with this, but have never seen any evidence to back it up.

Free media needs clickbait in order to drive impressions (and blockers or not), so the more they can outrage a passionate groups the better.

Sharing it only rewards their behavior.

As soon as I saw it was from Jalopnik, I should've known it was garbage. The Maverick is nowhere near "embarrassing." It's been a smash hit ever since day one. The refresh may not be the best received but chances are Ford will still sell everyone they make, it'll just take longer. I'm not even gonna bother to read the article with a title like that. They can suck it!

Fifteen to twenty years ago Jalopnik had fantastic content, then they were acquired by gawker and they let their dumb political beliefs dictate their writing. Now I believe it has a new owner but a lot of the same narrow minded writers who don't know their ass from their elbow
