2.0L - Ecoboost downgraded to 238/HP ?

Hi,

Why was the power reduced in the 2025 2.0 EB?

Saw that also, possibly wanting to phase out ecoboost in favor of hybrid. Hybrid can now tow what ecoboost does and looks like they aren't offering the ecoboost in XL and XLT for 25? Or possibly because of the new lobo ecoboost performance model?

I agree the 2.0 , should be a 2.7 or at least the 2.3 , but the trans is the same too , most don’t realize our 8 speeds are actually a seven speed!
You will never get it to auto shift all 8 speeds.The paddle shifters can be added to ours, a few on here have done it , I have one on order from fast mavericks .
We may see an ST but it will be another 2 years.

I added paddle shifters to my Mav. I also have a JB4 that displays the gear you are in. 2nd gear is rarely used....like 99% never used. The only time I actually see it is I downshift into 2nd. Upshift goes from 1 to 3 almost exclusively. So the Lobo they probably used Forscan to eliminate the 2nd gear indicator or maybe it has Sport Mode with a different rpm to change gears?

Loving my '23 EcoBoost even more now.

Agree with those that are disappointed the Lobo does not have a 2.7. Now that would have been something for sure. As it stands now in my world what the hell is the point.

If it is a "new" engine, I am glad that I have the 2024. I don't want to be the guinea pig for the first version of the new one. I do like the port and direct injection to keep the valves cleaner.

Also, the "gasoline particulate filter" is somewhat of a misnomer. It does not filter the gasoline. The gas distinguishes it from a diesel particulate filters which have been common for years. It filters the exhaust. So adds back pressure.

Are these gas ones as prone to cracking like the diesel ones? Having a bit of an unhappy flashback from my TDI days.

Since we're just speculating at this point - maybe the plan is for a GPF (gasoline particulate filter) on the '25's. GPF's are coming for sure for boosted GDI engines (as per last EPA rules) but my assumption was that 2026 would be the earliest practical intro date for US vehicles (already have them in Europe).

Whadda ya know - I may have guessed right.

During EPA final rule back-and-forth, FORD (and industry groups) wanted to delay implementation until MY2029, guess they changed their mind. They can't effectively meet the 0.5 mg/mile particulate matter (PM) requirement w/o going to a GPF.

From the Ford UK site, owners manual extract on GPF's for '24 Focus (looks like it covers in general all engine offerings for the UK Focus). On European forum websites, anecdotally I've seen people mainly complaining about throwing trouble codes when regeneration isn't complete enough. More of a problem for people that don't drive a lot. GPF's definitely rob some power. The "drive for a minimum of 20 minutes including highway" bit ticks folks off.

GPF's (or as Europe and Aussies call them, Petrol Particulate Filters, PPF) aren't the end of the world. Used for many years now in Europe (and China?), generally no big issues. Aussies had/have a bit of an issue as their fuel standards wrt sulfur content wasn't like Europe or US/Canada; evidently before 2024 their 'regular unleaded' could have up to 150 ppm sulfur which 'clogged' PPF's. Now: "By December 15, 2024, all petrol at Australian service stations will have a maximum sulfur level of 10 parts per million. This applies to 91 RON, 95 RON, 98 RON and E85 unleaded fuel." US/Canada/Europe regs require 10 ppm max so we're good.

Biggest issue I've found from Europe forums is the sometimes throwing of fault codes when regeneration is needed. I'm sure US/Canada Ford service departments won't be feeling the love for GPF's. But as we all know, you add complexity to anything, more things can happen. GPF's aren't supposed to wear out per se, and will be covered warranty-wise as a piece of emmisions control equipment (just like you cat converter).

Hopefully the newest generation GPF's that Ford uses won't negatively impact fuel economy. Will be interesting to see what the window sticker EPA MPG figures are for the '25 2.0EB, but I'm guessing may not see that for a while.

They'll eventually end up on some F150 engines too (I can almost hear the howls now from those forum members), but not much we can do about it except deal with it.

How does the 2.5L handle the 0.5mg/mi PM requirement? Do they test just the engine? Does it get a pass because it produces 0 when on electric? Is the Atkinson cycle that much more emissions friendly?

How would the hybrid cope with regen?

How does regen work with stop start?

this is pretty bad news, and I do not understand why Ford marketing has been saying it's pretty much the same output, when clearly this would not be.

I can't find this part online (yet?) but I assume this device has a sensor onboard. If it does, you're not going to be able to remove it easily, might as well just consider it part of the catalytic converter. the EPA came down extremely hard on companies doing diesel particulate filter deletes. numerous million-dollar plus fines (largest over 10 million, I believe, and the owners got jail time). so for that reason I wouldn't expect any tuners or muffler shops to be interested in removing it, either.

I would be curious to see the effects of a downpipe and exhaust would have on it. If you can't do anything about this device, but you still get good gains by optimizing flow upstream and downstream of it, maybe it's a not a big deal for the ecoboost tuning crowd.

...not a big deal *except* I now believe that 12 hp loss is very real.
