This isn't a thread about whether self driving is real or will be real (or when). That's politics and opinion, and please keep yours to yourself (as will I). It's a thread for the over 70 crowd about whether you would welcome a self-driving vehicle if it was safe and reliable and affordable.

Given those parameters - it arrives after my family takes away my car keys but before I die, it's affordable, it's safe and reliable. I would love a self driving vehicle. It's freedom for the elderly. Anybody else? Pro or con, I'm just curious about whether you would never get in one, or you would welcome it.

My Prius has active cruise control and lane centering. Closest thing that I have been in to “self driving” and it definitely makes driving in traffic much more enjoyable (wrong word, more tolerable?) and it does an amazing job. In San Francisco, there are already fleets of self driving cars.
I think we are very close on the technology being ready for everyday/everyone use. My wife doesn’t trust the self driving stuff and the ACC on the Prius, but someone said to me once, “you trust yourself to stay awake/alert/attention, but you don’t trust a device that never blinks, gets distracted, etc. ?”
you hear on the news, all the times a Tesla runs someone over or causes an accident, but you never hear about the times that it prevents one. My question is how often does a Tesla get into an accident compared to human controlled? It isn’t news worthy when a person gets into an accident, but it is when a self driving car does. Just something to think about 🙂

🤔 I may not own one but I would certainly ride in one.
At that point in my life. Rather than spend Tens of Thousands of dollars on a self-driving car.
I think that money can be used for a car service when needed.
More than likely we will see self-driving cars being used as car services AKA taxis.
More than likely you probably even take structured vacations. Think organize tours. You may not like the idea. You may be holding on to the image of the open road.
Realistically, if we are to the age, where we have to give up our keys, those days are pretty much behind us.

I like all of the safety features on my Maverick- other car has none of that. Yes I would embrace a self driving car at some point especially if it had overrides. Think I am out of luck on the motorcycle though.

I am 84 years old, and would have no problem with a self driving car. In fact I would love it! I'm sure the insurance companys will fight this, because of the fact there would be less accidents so they would have to lower there rates! Also family members wouldn't have to drive me around for doctors appointments etc. I'm all for it.

I have lane centering on my Lariat, but never use it. I'd bet very few older people would use self-drive, as they much prefer to be aware of what the vehicle is doing. I think self-drive is for snowflakes who can't pay attention to the road while they play with their cellphones, and spaced-out druggies.

I don't even like the idea of self-parking, but I'm still healthy enough at 71 to not have any concern. However, given your parameters, I can see the potential value in prolonging independence for those who can no longer drive safely. I do think the parameters, as defined, will take a couple more decades to be met so it probably won't be a decision I'll ever have to make.

I would not own a self-driving car unless the manufacturer takes responsibility for crashes. Would get a lawyer to review the liability terms prior to purchase. The person in the driver seat can still be held liable depending on the scenario.
hmmm
