Would you buy an EV maverick for 25-30k?

I know I would, probably to go alongside our hybrid. This is Ford's affordable electric vehicle platform, internally called CE1, created by a very talented team of ex apple and Tesla engineers. It's apparently going to be used for an electric maverick and bronco sport, likely other vehicles as well.

I know 25-30k seems too good to be true, but Ford seems very committed to delivering at this price point.
No, it’s not for me. The infrastructure is not reliable yet. The truck would be useful for running errands around town and in my opinion that’s it.
I have a friend who has a lightening and loves it, it’s just not for me. I will stick with my hybrid.

I'll be honest, I'm kinda stunned on the feedback I'm getting. I expected this to be like 80% of people saying hell yeah.

I don't deny EVs have some shortcomings, but I would personally be able to overlook all of that if Ford was able to make something enticing, with a low ownership cost, for this price, that would be incredible imo. Yeah, long term range might not be ideal, but for shorter commutes and around town drives, it would be golden. I suppose it's one of those things where it often comes down to generational differences. A lot of the older individuals I've met are very reluctant to own an EV, but many younger buyers are eager as hell for some truly affordable EVs to hit the market.

If Ford could pull this off, it would be a massive win for them. Because they're right, China is coming one way or another, and while it's not happening as quickly as originally projected, the electric car market is growing. If Ford and other American brands don't step up with an affordable EV, there will be plenty of Chinese brands that will be happy to do it for them. I'd much rather give my money to Ford over BYD.
I'd look at it. I doubt I'd trade my hybrid for one. Unless it had a massive range, and better features at that price. Battery tech is rapidly evolving, and with Ford Building their own battery plants in the US, costs will come down.

Ford was committed to the $39k Ford Lightning too which now retails for a cool $53k.

Ford is never going to build a $25k electric truck.

Curious where they'd put the big battery. And what theyd strip out to get down to 30k. I like my mav so far but sometime I'm like "oh... no hood lifts that's.. something" there's a lot of really thoughtful design but now and then something missing.

So somebody goes and shows you a base model XL no options and tells you
"Find another 5k to remove so we can fit a 10000 dollar electric battery."

Like what has to go then?

January showed a lot of people what EVs are like in sub zero weather. 20+ vehicles in a line waiting to charge and the one plugged in won't charge because it's too cold.
If you have a heated garage, a dedicated charger and never drive more than 1/2 what the vehicle is rated for, and NEVER pull a trailer, maybe.

While we're dreaming about a 25-30k EV Maverick, I'd also like to ask for housing prices from 2010 and 2.5% mortgages. 😉

By the time they figure out their supply chain and retool the factory, I doubt we'll see many vehicles in the 25-30k range, except maybe for the tin can on wheels Mitsubishi Mirage.

Yeah, no Maverick BEV retrofit. It needs to be a compact pickup full redesign catered to the BEV, so not a Maverick. Its should be sleek like a Tesla. EV's do great as economy cars with minimal aero drag and no engine bay in front. Make it fuel efficient, which the Maverick really isn't from a aerodynamic standpoint. It's gonna have to loose the traditional truck look.

The issue with EV design (actually ICE as well, but more so EV) is vehicle operation dependent upon the infotainment system. Many vehicles built 20 years ago are still very capable. Few, if any, vehicles with all the electronic gadgetry will still be on the road in 2044. Hit like if you have a vehicle over 20 years old.

A full redesigned body would also increase costs. Sleak and smooth body panel forming also costs a lot of money. Even if we pretend that won't factor in to increasing cost, look at the base base barebones maverick and find over 5k in features to remove even standard features to reduce it down just to reach "electric" drive.

I think you'd have to cut the back seats entirely Fixed rear windows in the cargo shelf area where seats used to be battery below that. Manual locking tailgate. Smaller harder tires less suspension travel. No tinted windows. Maybe manual crank windows to save money on wiring.

We could call it the "ford austerity"

Our first house was three bedroom, one bath, one car garage. $7800.
You couldn't build the garage for that today.
First new car was a 1966 VW Beetle. $2002.16, with sunroof, gauge package and tach.
Everything goes up and nobody goes anywhere. It's like riding an elevator where the whole building goes up and down with you.
I found my parents in an old US Census listing. They were making $624 a YEAR! Yes, $12 a week. It's all relative. Just hope you have rich relatives. :D

I think the novelty of EV's has worn off and the reality of their shortcomings finally has widespread recognition. When energy storage technology and the supporting infrastructure improves, things will change. But until then, IMHO a plug-in hybrid is as far as most people would go.

BEV ain't there yet for many of peoples use cases, not mine either. It still has some serious pitfalls and possible future adoption problems I'd like to let others figure out.

I'm going to wait a good number of years for those items to play out. When we get there my rare ICE vehicles will probably pull a premium because that seems to be our current economy (if it's rare, pay stupid prices even if you need a loan🤷‍♂️).

The BEV adoption, to me, seems like the early days of iPhone right now. You have certain groups pushing it along with a cult following that is incapable of seeing anything but bright side. It makes it hard to have an objective conversation.

Normally I wouldn't believe it, but considering they're basically saying the future of the auto industry is dependant on being able to counter Chinese brands, it sounds like they're taking it seriously.
