Now if you want to talk grid, you should talk about regional interconnect and transmission issues, which has nothing to do with BEVs,

This is especially true for Texas which is isolated from the national grid. Texas leads the nation in renewable energy production, especially wind, but there are often transmission bottlenecks. The biggest consumer of electricity is the industrial sector, with oil refineries being at the top of the list. People charging their cars barely make a dent. And don't get me started on bit-coin mining.

One side of this discussion has people trying to force us all to do what THEY want us to do. There aren't any states trying to ban EVs, but there are states trying to ban ICE cars.

I don't have any problem with people choosing EVs - I just think that adoption is slowing until the technology improves significantly. That may happen soon, or not for decades.

For everyone convinced otherwise, look at the stats - hybrids currently outsell EVs AND sales are growing faster (by units, not price). With today's tech, they're awesome choices for many of us.

I just want the choice to be mine, not the government's.

NO ONE... is forcing you to by an EV..If you don't want to buy one, don't.

You sure about the power grid? TVA has been asking users to cut back on use, because of cold weather usage. Seems to me that if we all switched to EVs there would be problems.

It's not so much the actual "grid" itself (although plenty of upgrades are needed for long-term reliability) as it is the lack of power generation due to restrictions on the fossil fuels that power much of the grid. For every fossil fueled generation plant that is taken off-line, there is a severe lack of renewable powered replacement capacity. This is big problem, and getting worse daily, and is especially problematic in peak demand situations, where there simply is not enough power being generated to meet demand. Wide spread BEV adoption is just another small problem, within this larger one. The current administration seems dead-set on phasing out more & more fossil fueled electrical generation plants, with no tangible plan to replace the lost KW hours with renewable backup. Increasing demand combined with decreasing production usually doesn't end well.

There are a lot of grid difficulties.

"PJM has urged Talen Energy to delay its deactivation of two of four units at the 840-MW coal, oil, and gas–fired Herbert A. Wagner Generating Station in Maryland until transmission upgrades are put into service around 2028.

Let the progression take place at a reasonable pace and also let the buying public decide what stays, what gets added and what gets deleted in regards to our vehicle needs.

I'll soon (next year or two) be taking advantage of a zero-cost-to-me solar system, and I'll use battery backup of the house instead of the $15,000 Kohler whole-house gas generator I had at my last home. Also I'll be sure to buy a BEV that can power the house for a week if the backup battery and solar and grid all let me down at the same time (apocalypse, I guess).

Zero cost solar is widely available. You sign a contract to purchase the solar at below market rate for N years, and the system itself is free (not the battery backup). I have several friends and family who have gone this route, and they just shake their heads in puzzlement that others (like me) don't go that route (assuming you have a standalone home). They don't spend a penny on the system. They save money on their electricity from day one. They have backup power. There's a 30% upfront government tax credit. And in ten years they own the system free and clear.

When you look at the whole system. Solar on your house. Battery backup. Ability of the BEV to power your whole home for a week. And government incentives for buying your BEV and for installing solar... It's kind of a no brainer. I must not have brains, because I'm still holding off one or two years before I pull that trigger at my house.

On the grid topic, which I see became a minor war (bummer)...

Tesla is doing several things to stabilize grids. First is their Megapack system - in use all around the world and making serious money for the companies and states that operate them. The second is their virtual grid - where people in an area software-link their BEVs to the grid. They charge off peak for less cost, and they make their batteries available to the grid at peak - earning money. Some people out there actually earn profit from owning a BEV connected to these systems. They make more lending their BEV battery to the grid at peak than they pay pulling electricity off-peak. Grid operators around the world are praising the Tesla solutions (and no, I'm not a Tesla fanboy, so don't go there).

It's not a baseload solution. But it's a great stabilizer and peak mitigation solution.
