I have an annoying issue with my Maverick and I'm not sure whether I have a glitch or this is a design feature:

If I leave my keys in the ignition (which I often do for brief periods around jobsites), the doors seem to lock automatically after a short while. Fortunately I had programmed a code I can remember into the keypad.
Has anyone else experienced this?
It is very annoying and any help with disabling this would be much appreciated!
How about this scenario: You inadvertently leave your key in the ignition, Come back and you have the dreaded "dead maverick" syndrome. Now there's no way in except finding someone handy with a slim jim.

Not if you leave a 80lb bag of sand on the driver seat.

Actually 15lbs will work. What ever it takes to show the airbag on. The truck won't automatically lock if passengers are in the seats. The vehicle has to be in drive and moving forward before the automatic door locks to work.

That may be the answer is to leave some weight on the passenger seat to trick the truck into thinking that it has passengers and it won't lock on its own. I have a Lariat so I can't test this idea.

I find these threads funny - basically like 6 people asking why Ford would design a feature that 99.999% of buyers feel is a benefit.

Edit to add - doors can be unlocked via the FREE app access for any trim level, and the keypad is either available or a cheap add-on. I forced myself to use the keypad initially. Now, I couldn't live without it I think it is excellent in regular daily use. So easy to both unlock and lock doors (8/9 keys simultaneously).
99.999% of buyers feel that an unexpected, uncommanded locking of the doors, with your keys inside, is a benefit? Where do you get this data from?
I have owned around 100 cars and have never had one do this before, including my first Maverick, which was also an XLT Hybrid!

As for the Ford app, it is useless if you left your phone inside the car that is now locked. On top of that, it doesn't do this all the time, just most of the time.

Relying on only the keypad is not a great option, as you're likely not going to think to give your code to everyone who may use your car. And I think XL models don't have keypads. Regardless, keypads are not infallible, the one on my Focus stopped working after three years.

But I did not start this thread start a debate, I'm just looking for a way to stop this from occurring. Searching the forums, it seems that others are having the same issue, intermittent self-locking with the keys inside.

My XLT does not lock the doors if I keep the keys in the ignition. I park in my garage every night and just leave the keys in the ignition over night and when I head to work or the store the next morning the doors are always unlocked and ready to open.

If my Mav did what @Mikk is describing I would not consider it a feature as it would also annoy the shit out of me.

What if you need to get out to open a gate, don’t have a keypad and have your phone in the truck?
I haven’t experienced this problem with any
other vehicles I have owned.
Now I suspect, I might be accidentally pushing the lock button but wouldn’t bet on it.
I am fortunate, I have a keypad and remember my code. I’ve also left the window down at times.

WHY would you NOT want the doors to lock after a short amount of time with the keys still in the ignition??? I feel this is a good thing!
Because if you don't have cellular/internet service and no keypad you're screwed.

Personally, I don't need my truck to save me from myself....YMMV.

After reading some threads about others having the same problem, I started to suspect that it was not locking itself, but that I was inadvertently locking it.

First thing I noticed was that it was only the driver's door that ever locked, the other three stayed unlocked. Second, I never heard a "clunk" of a power lock engagement. Thirdly, it seemed to happen mostly when I was somewhat hurried, like getting out to retrieve my mail or hopping out for a minute on a jobsite.

I had a good look at the layout of the door release, and I think it's a bit of a design issue: The door lock is right above the door handle. I use my two smallest fingers to pull the latch and at the same time push the door open. It is easy to also push the lock at the same time, which explains why only the driver's door ever locked and why I never heard a power lock operating. I have been vigilant the last couple of months and haven't had the issue reoccur more than once.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread. This has happened to me two or three times now (22 XLT, non-hybrid). The first time it happened was in the winter. I stepped out of the truck to scrape my windows, left the car running, and the passenger side door was locked when I attempted to get back in. It freaked me out for a moment, but the back door opened up, so I could get in and shimmy up front to unlock the driver's side door.

For the record, I have the standard key that goes into the ignition, no fancy key fob or push-button start.

Yesterday, at the gym, I realized I forgot my backpack and stepped out of my truck while it was running (phone inside the truck). This is a small gym, and I parked right by their door. When I returned 10-15 seconds later, the driver's side door was locked. I had to open the back door and crawl up front to unlock the door. I've never used the keypad, but from the sound of it, I guess I will have to learn how to use it - thanks, Ford!

Besides the winter season, I rarely leave my car running while I'm outside of it. I have a hard time believing that on the few occasions where I've got out of the truck and left it running, I've fat-fingered the lock at the same time as opening the door. No way. IMO, the lock isn't that close to the handle.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one experiencing this case of the randomly locked door.

Interesting and a little concerning to me,
Us late to the dance 2024 guys won’t have the luxury of a keypad.

If the truck does this on its own it's an undocumented feature. From the owner's manual:

AUTOLOCK
WHAT IS AUTOLOCK
Autolock is a locking feature that locks
your vehicle doors when you start driving.
AUTOLOCK REQUIREMENTS
Autolock locks all the doors when all of the
following occur:
• All doors are closed.
• The ignition is on.
• Your vehicle reaches a speed greater
than 12 mph (20 km/h).

No mention of locking by itself in any other cases.

I'm paranoid with getting locked out of my older Honda minivan, if I EVER leave the keys in (running because of A/C usually) I crack the window enough I can reach an arm back in to unlock it if I accidentally lock it....

It's been 10 months now since my October 2022 update to this thread, and I stand by what I said back then. I have been more careful when opening the door and the problem has not re-ocurred (ok, maybe once). Only one door locks, not all, so the Maverick can still be entered. I remain convinced that the close location of the lock button the the inside release handle is the issue. If you pull the release and at the same time push the door open with one hand, you can push the lock button enough to lock that particular door. Almost always happens when in a bit of a rush.

Here is what I wrote last October:

- Don't fat finger the door lock on the way out
- Do get a hide a key with a cheap vallet key (no chip, won't start your vehicle, but will unlock it)

There are also usually less expensive chipped keys you can get from a good locksmith that will start the car, just no remote feature. This has saved me twice in my 30 years of being a driver but totally worth it. Think of camping in a remote location 2 states from home and keys being lost in the woods while hiking. Still able to drive home without combing 2 miles of woods or waiting long time for expensive locksmith visit.

I had my driver door lock on me yesterday while getting gas. Key in the ignition with the truck turned off, phone in the truck. Lucky the other three doors were unlocked!

Not sure if I hit the lock button on the drivers door but sure caused some stress for a minute or two!

Have a look at my August 23rd update (two posts above), I'm convinced it's just a "fat finger" thing. The lock is so close to the release handle that if you unlatch and push the door open at the same time (usually when in a rush), you wind up locking the driver's door.
