I have an annoying issue with my Maverick and I'm not sure whether I have a glitch or this is a design feature:

If I leave my keys in the ignition (which I often do for brief periods around jobsites), the doors seem to lock automatically after a short while. Fortunately I had programmed a code I can remember into the keypad.
Has anyone else experienced this?
It is very annoying and any help with disabling this would be much appreciated!

I don't have mine yet, hopefully arriving in July, but I have always been concerned about this feature on other vehicles. Luckily I don't leave my keys in my car because it has a button on the handle to unlock and push button start so never have to take my keys out of my pocket.

Luckily my Lariat will have push button and keypad and perhaps mobile unlock features?

It would be nice if you could disable the automatic lock in the menus, perhaps it is a feature? Someone else may have some insight.

Volkswagens I have owned don't let you lock the doors if the keys are in the ignition; which is the way it should be in my opinion. :)

I agree. There should be a sensor in the key so it knows the keys are in the car, or at the very least a sensor that wouldn't allow the doors to lock automatically if the keys are in the ignition.

I have a Lariat and did a little test yesterday just to actually see how the locking system works.

Took my FOB out to the truck and opened the door. Got inside and hit start button to turn on truck and placed in drive. Put back in park, left Fob on center console, exited vehicle and tried to lock truck with touch to door handle. Nothing happened. Waited until dash lights went out and tried again. Nothing. Went in house for 1/2 hour, came back out and tried to lock door, Nothing. Opened door removed Fob, closed door, touched door handle and the truck locked.

Moral of story - You can not lock FOB in Lariat Truck with push button start unless you use the keypad to lock the door.

So it is possibly an XL and XLT issue, trucks that don't have the Lariat package and/or push button start? Perhaps it is part of an upgraded package that those trucks don't come equipped with to sense the keys are in the truck. Do they even come with a key fob?

You can with pressing 8 and 9 at same time on door keypad. #1 reason i buy fords. dont have to take keys with you on runs or filling up pockets. Of course a window smash and vehicle stolen but leave them out of site and have insurance.

I used to never take my key out of the ignition. I would pull into my parking spot inside the ring, leave it in gear and go home where I would do the same thing. I only take the key out when shopping.
Then I got my first automatic, a Chevy Equinox. Pull into my spot, turn the ignition off and leave it in gear. Bad. Did the same thing at home and it locked the doors and drained the battery with the keys in the ignition and the doors locked. Chevy towed it and said nothing's wrong. Turns out it's bad programming (bad habits) of the operator. Old dog operator.
Same thing would happen with my Buick suv if I leave the key in for days while I use the motorcycle.
So. the operator needs to be trained to always take the key with or keep a spare handy. Lucky you have the keypad.

WHY would you NOT want the doors to lock after a short amount of time with the keys still in the ignition??? I feel this is a good thing!
I park in a super secure area at work (have to go thru security checkpoints) and live in the country. Don't even lock my house doors. About the only time I lock my car is for the airport or a rare trip to the city.

Not quite: I have an XLT, no start button, have to put the key in the ignition like in the good 'ol days. Fob is hanging on the key. If i leave the key in the ignition (with the fob), the doors lock themselves, essentially locking you out. I know the keypad code, but someone else using it won't.

Maybe the Ford works like the Honda on key/fob vehicles

I find these threads funny - basically like 6 people asking why Ford would design a feature that 99.999% of buyers feel is a benefit.

Edit to add - doors can be unlocked via the FREE app access for any trim level, and the keypad is either available or a cheap add-on. I forced myself to use the keypad initially. Now, I couldn't live without it I think it is excellent in regular daily use. So easy to both unlock and lock doors (8/9 keys simultaneously).

So...it has a sensor that it knows the keys are there or it presumably wouldn't lock. I mean if you took the keys but left it unlocked, it wouldn't then lock itself, correct? This seems like something you can adjust in settings.

I had a 2010 Dodge caravan that had a sensor. I was at an organization day event and kept pressing the button to close the sliding door. It kept refusing. So I manually closed it/locked it and then saw my keys sitting there, mocking me. Sometimes technology 'tries' to help but is not always heeded.
