I know @Glen Baker LLC was particularly interested in this after I managed to do it the other day. Took a little more testing but I can duplicate it every time now. Note, this happens on my vehicle, as the saying goes "your mileage may vary." I have a new 2025 Maverick Lariat with the "intelligent key access".

Don't test this if you don't have another way into your vehicle! You have been warned!
  1. Start up vehicle in driveway (I haven't tested this during or after driving the vehicle).
  2. Unlock all doors.
  3. Leave the keys in the vehicle, dashboard is fine.
  4. Putz around in vehicle until you get the pop-up message about the car running and press Ok to let it continue running.
  5. Exit vehicle, shut all doors, don't touch lock/unlock, just get out. you can test opening and closing the door, just don't touch the lock pad. the door is unlocked at this time.
  6. Walk away, stay away for a few minutes. Not sure on time amount needed, I stayed out for 5 each time.
  7. Come back, all doors are locked. Keys are in vehicle. Engine is running.
Not sure if this is a bug or a feature, but at least I know not to do this! I have not tried with vehicle off or any other conditions. I am curious if this can happen to others, but please be careful if you try it yourself. I will contact Ford and report this to them.

It seems to auto lock the doors when you put it in drive, but possibly it just does it on a time delay from when the ignition is activated.

I'd confirm on #5 - besides don't touch lock/unlock button, don't press lock lever which is separate.
That's the one causing the issue when people report a "problem".

The fact you are so detailed but left that out concerns me.
When reporting it to Ford - that better be included or they will rightfully think you pressed it.

I could see a scenario where you press the lock lever - which is the confirmation you intended to lock the keys in the car while running, and is allowed, And so the keyless-entry system after some time locks the other doors for you since it was purposeful.

Also - do you have keypad entry installed?

I tested it two more times today. I was very careful not to touch anything that could lock the door. In fact after immediately getting out of the vehicle I could open and close the door a few times. It wasn’t until I went back in the house (it’s a bit cold out here still and I had things to do) and then went back to the car that it was locked. So it auto locks after a period of time. Maybe I’ll sit out there and time it and wait to see how long before it locks. But at Lear I know the circumstances to make it happen.

I do not have the keypad as it isn’t currently available for 2025s. I had my order canceled due to unavailability.

I can’t say the circumstances would be particularly common. Maybe if someone was hanging out in the vehicle to get warm/cool off from the weather and then got out.

It's not uncommon for me to start my vehicle up in the winter while I clear the snow/ice off of it. it sounds like it would relock under these conditions??

Thank you "Scottjl"
Can you video it?
If it's too large to be posted here. I'll DM you my email address and you can send it to me. I'll figure out a way to compress it and try to post it.
Good Luck

Video what? The whole procedure? Don't see much point. I can reproduce this if I want. I have no idea if it happens on other models or other years, I can only test this on my vehicle. If you don't believe me, shrug, I don't care. At least I know what not to do.

I don't know. I didn't test with FordPass, taking the keys out of the car with me, or anything other than exactly the steps I described here. I can say if you're going to test this yourself, make sure you have a second set of keys handy.

My XLT Hybrid will lock the doors about half the time I exit...leaving the keys in the truck makes no difference. I've become so used to it, it has become a non-issue since I have the door pillow keypad to open the door if keys are inside.

My driver door locks sometimes. I think I'm hitting the lock lever by the door handle.

in my testing i was very careful not to touch anything that would lock the door, and could easily open and close the door immediately after exiting the vehicle. it self-locks after a period of time.

For 2022-24 model years.
Most of reported that they've gotten out of the truck for a short period of time to get the mail out of the mailbox or the pump gas
Here's my video I originally posted in August of last year on how it's most likely happening.

Download the Ford app on your phone, and you can unlock your truck from there.
