I believe one of the primary functions of the lower cover in hybrids is to control air flow under the hood. Keeping the engine (and cats) as close to operating temperature as possible is important and saves fuel, so this makes sense. It seems Ford initially did such a good job of controlling air flow that they had to reverse course and remove some grille shutters to prevent under-hood fires should the engine throw a rod.
QUESTION to ALL:
Does anyone know the secret handshake to manually start the hybrid engine in engineering test mode so I can do an idle leak check after an oil change?

Not going to directly answer the question here because I truly don’t know - I just turned the heat to max until the coolant was cold enough to signal the ICE to start. It worked.

I feel like it might also start the engine if you hit the “gas” pedal. Easy enough to test, I am not certain of the answer right now though.

Here is another reason that you might want to do oil changes yourself: most dealers and oil/lube places are using a vacuum to suck the old oil out from the oil filler port rather than from the drain plug. They do this for 2 reasons: one is that it's much faster and two they don't have to deal with the liability of drain plug overthreading issue. Some people argue that draining from the bottom is better because residue oil, sediments, and metal sheds are more likely to get drained out than leaving them on the bottom of the pan.

Now there are also rumors that dealers and oil/lube shops use recycled oil...

Wing bolt = great ideal. Do you by chance know the thread type and size?
Don’t know, but they are more of a screw type thread than a nut. There’s no way I’d want to do it by hand though. A cordless screwdriver with a Torx bit is much faster.

You're missing the point. Ford puts a bunch of holes in the panel already, but not where they are needed to do the most common and basic maintenance needed. Why?

And for those who go to the dealership or Jiffy Lube for oil changes, tell me the high school dropout changing your oil is going to take the time to replace those panel screws when he drops a few of them down into the pit - yeah right! Over time you're going to have a nice air dam underneath.
I am with you all the way. They put random wholes in cover but purposely didn't put them in places need for servicing the vehicle. I think this is to add to dealer maintenance cost and the to make the average do it your self scared to tackle the simple services. I did my first oil change at 1500 mile, other than removing 17 screws for the cover, the draining and oil filter replacement was easy. Mobile one $36, motor craft oil filter $7 and 2 HR of time (because I marked the screw holes inspected all the under side and investigated part on vehicle) will take less than hour next time. Took it to dealer for second oil change 5K miles to have on record cost was outrageous $115 they said because it was hybrid need special oil that cost a lot more. Really the oil is about the same price I think it is the time to remove and replace under cover the rest is as basic as can be. So my plan is to change my oil every 5K miles, I will change every other one and not sure if I will bring back to dealer or use a good reputable oil change shop that will use proper oil for less money. Wish someone would come out with after market under engine cover that has access flap for oil filter and drain plug.

Because I'm an engineer and it's my job to question things that don't make sense. Especially since the rest of the vehicle seems very well designed.

I also have a maintenance background and really hate it when engineers design things that aren't maintenance friendly.
I have a 2017 escape and it’s the same as my 23 maverick hybrid

I'm a fabricator, so I have questioned engineers all my life, because we have to build what they design.

When I changed the oil in my wife's sonic, it used an 8 mm head on an approximately 5/8" bolt, aluminum at that.

What engineers thinks a bolt head should be smaller than the bolt diameter, further, make it from a soft metal to begin with?

One that never unbolted a damn thing in their life, let alone 3 years after it was tightened and weathered with salt, ash, etc.

Stripped off the head like butter.

And probably just to use common socket sizes during assembly.

You’re right. You just quickly push the throttle about half way down and let off. The gas engine will start. I start my gas engine every time before I drive away in the morning; That way it doesn’t start dry when I pull into traffic and have to accelerate quickly. Gives me peace of mind.

Right??? I wonder what genius decided to make that piece of plastic look like Swiss cheese except for putting access holes where they're actually needed? Unless it was done on purpose to give dealers a reason to upsell.

Remember, the word "kluge" was "invented" by either British engineers referencing German engineering or German engineers themselves... when you see a kluge, don't ask why...

Seemed like 20 because I didn't see the two little tabs in front that need to be tucked under and had to take a few back out.

I mark one of my tires now, it happened at a chevy dealer had a scratch on one wheel and when I came out of waiting room the scratched wheel was in the same place I flipped out they said they were sorry they forgot, only 2 things on repair order FORGOT they gave me a free car wash. Never went back.
Ford Pass has a cold tire inflation graphic which showed my rear driver tire almost always first to loose a PSI. Right after the dealer service, the front driver tire showed that number. I think that supports a legitimate tire rotation was done. I used a mailer coupon and points to pay for "the works". 11 months/7500 miles hybrid. Lief Johnson Ford in Austin. I check and add air myself periodically.

Thanks for your suggestion, but when I tried holding the OK button on my hybrid, it just reset the current trip odometer. I will have to try it again with small mods like holding down the OK button before inserting the ignition key, and perhaps just turning it to ACC or ON (not START). Aside from tuning the AFE (MPG) factor, my main goal is to be able to test run the engine in the hybrid as if it were in an EB. e.g. Turning the key will start it, then It will idle and respond to accelerator inputs as if controlling the throttle. Ignition OFF resets this mode back to normal. I think a LOT of DIY-type people would like this capability. One more thing for my to-do list.
