Thanks, I tried that, and it worked great. I wish they had given better instructions with the Motorola Dongle.
Try using a generic password when prompted, such as 0000 or 1234?

Most of my driving is errands and shopping- in and out of car- and I can leave the phone in my pocket so I have it on me when I leave the truck. Also continually plugging and unplugging a cable will eventually damage the socket on your phone.

For short trips when I don't have any need to charge. Nice to just hop in and go, phone in pocket.
I can see how that is handy. I mostly listen to music and podcasts on a USB stick. Will not use the apps on my phone much.
Another question: I read the manual but couldn't find an answer. Is the USB a port the only media port? The wireless dongle didn't work on the type c port. Is that type c port on the dash only for charging?

Order one certified for data transfer, not all are (i.e. power transfer only). If your port has power that means it's working, so a proper cable should solve your issue.
DOH!
The wireless dongle needed an update. Phone works fine on the c port, android auto.
thanks

The one in my Maverick has worked so well that I just added one this morning to my 1993 Lightning, which has an Android Auto head unit to go with my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra.
  • Plugged the MA1 into the USB extension cable from the head unit
  • Paired the phone and MA1 via Bluetooth (no password required, just agree to pair)
  • Select Android Auto on the head unit.
That was all I needed to do.
I've got the MA1 waiting on my truck, too. A little pricey, but the best reviews, even here in MTC. I like simple. And dependable. I also have a Motorola phone, which shouldn't actually make any difference at all, but I know Motorola products.

I use the Motorola AA dongle with a Moto phone and it works good .No password required . It does disconnect once in a while but reconnects automatically. Its good for the everyday around town but for long trips it will drain your phone so I have to plug it in and than its just works on the usb.

Also keep in mind 'some', albeit a limited number, of apps will run wireless with no additional hardware, if you simply want music and/or say Amazon Alexa functionality. (Alexa will let you send a text to someone OTHER than a reply to last message received). Ford+Alexa works great for those of us with Prime accounts, and fully wireless, no cable, no adapter required.

From memory, other apps include Spotify, Pandora, and I believe SeriusXM, the latter also allowing access to their expanded Pandora channels with skip capability. Sadly, if you want to use Waze, it no longer supports the built in AppLink of Sync3. - Just realized, this may only work with a Lariat Lux, as you may need Sync3 for Applink features to work, so if you fall into that category, those items work just fine.

I took care of that in the Maverick by running a charge cord from the USB charge port at the back of the console. That way, my tendency to forget to plug in before starting to drive doesn't stop the music while, for long trips, I can plug in as needed.

The dongle acts as a cord and you only need to connect to that. Bluetooth to the truck isnt necessary for android auto or apple car play in this situation
I don't know about for Carplay but for Android Auto it does actually utilize both. Bluetooth is still used for voice communication along with initiating/maintaining connectivity.

I received the Atoto AD3WAA-BK from Amazon ($60). Android.
It works as intended but I don't really see the need for it so I am returning it. I don't see the point of plugging in the wireless dongle instead of just plugging in the phone? If I was using Waze or Google maps on a trip I'd have to charge the phone anyway so I'd have 2 devices plugged in.
Someone please point out if I'm missing something :) thanks
I'v been thinking about getting a dongle but you make a good point.

I can see the advantage for quick directions locally.
But for long trips I would want my phone plugged in because the GPS and screen use up the battery.

I use the dongle FOR long trips where the constant charge and usage can really heat your phone up which is bad on the battery. Get to around 50%, plug it into another port and let it charge back up to around 80 or so.
