Hey everyone, I’ll try to keep this short.
New truck 675 miles highway debris punched a hole in my hybrid cooler. Shop was great fixed everything. Picked up on Tuesday, drove about 200 miles no issues. Last night went out with the wife dinner and movie. After movie was over I got in started the truck and heard a weird whining sound didn’t know what it was but drove fine I continued thinking battery was charging or something since I always drive in eco mode. 2 miles down the road I stopped at a red light went to accelerate and the truck didn’t want to move and died in middle of road at 11:30 PM. Below is a shot of what it said.it wouldn’t allow me to take it out of park. While waiting for help I guess it cooled down and I was able to move the truck out of driving lanes. The thing is in the pic where you see Check engine and temp lights you can also see the temp gauge in corner reads normal. How is the hybrid system temps monitored?
Towing truck to shop hopefully have more updates. Once it cooled down it seemed fine and check engine is gone. I’m scared to drive it though. Not sure how shop can re create this

I think the gauge on the dash just reads the engine coolant temperature. The battery coolant is on a separate loop with it's own heat exchangers. If I had to speculate, I would guess that your dealer did something with the repair where the coolant slowly leaked out or wasn't flowing correctly. A slow leak could explain why it was fine for 200 miles.

Or the coolant simply wasn’t properly filled after the repair.

I haven’t seen any leaks, I was checking after repair. It also looks like it has 2 coolant reservoir’s both have fluid. Could it be an air bubble? I don’t know if that would explain the weird sound I heard when leaving parking lot

As a hybrid owner I’m grateful that a warning like that appears before catastrophic events occur. Autos in my past had no such warnings or alerts.

I am only speculating, but if it was the hybrid battery cooler, then the coolant used is basically an A/C system. since the hybrid batteries can get hot quickly i believe they use freon to help keep them cool. if that is the case and if the repair shop did not hook up new hoses correctly and they came loose or had a bad O-ring, the coolant leak would have been freon. so you would not see anything leaking as it would be in a gaseous state and not a liquid.

There are 2 coolant loops - high and "low" temp. Two separate reservoirs, two caps on one assembly - note B & C below. High temp is your standard ICE coolant system. "Low" temp is for the EV side - think the HVB, DC/DC inverter, etc. Basically, the HVB, etc. is liquid-cooled.

It is likely that the IPC temp gauge solely refers to the high temp coolant loop. However, the temp of the low temp coolant loop would still be monitored and apparently was the cause for displaying the issue above.

Alerting him after the vehicle dies and leaves him in the middle of the road - that's the holy grail of automotive tech you've been waiting for all your life?? 🤡

There is also three temperature sensors inside the transaxle. One on each field coil of the drive motor and the field coil of the starter/generator and one sensor for the fluid. The dealer should be able to find the code for the problem.

Hi there, I'd be happy to look into your Maverick concerns on my end. Will you send us a message with your VIN and dealership info? I can look into things on my end.

Probably undefiled cooling system or not bled properly. Good thing there's protection in place for this. In the old days you'll just be driving and getting your warped head replaced later.

If the coolant reservoirs were full, it may be a sensor error, bad wire, or yes, even an air bubble.

I've seen TRANSIENT spikes in temperature in cases where driving on the freeway in summer so everything is at "High Normal" then right away pulled over to a rest stop and the truck went to EV mode.

For whatever reason, stuff stopped circulating at the moment the engine shut. Maybe for just a second or two, and the engine (or maybe just the sensor?) developed a "hot spot" or erroneous / corrupt data.

With OBDII digital temperature readout- I saw it go 190°F to 300°F in one second, got a chime, then 2 seconds later, back to 190°F.

Mine was so brief, it did not trigger any shutdown or lasting effects. Maybe if the "error" (if yours was an error) lasts for more than a few seconds, what you experienced is the end result?
