As far as higher octane ,. It has been tested I think Car & Driver did it. NOT on a maverick but the results would be similar. Yes you increase MPG a little and gain a little more HP. Its because the car can advance the timing faster and more and not get pre ignition (knocking) with higher octane gas. Its rather simple from my racing days we could have faster old style mechanical timing advance when we used 112 motor octane race gas. Retard timing when I street gas.
Is it worth it NO according to the test you just wasted money for a slight increase in MPG or power depending on how you drove. BUT hey if you like wasting money go for it.
