I’m waiting on my order as well, I have an xlt hybrid cactus grey on the way. Well, I guess I should say the order is in. Anyway, someone was saying it’s quite expensive to get a new battery for hybrids. Does anyone know the expectant battery life and how much cost is to replace? Thanks

I'm betting that it will mirror the experience of most Ford Escape Hybrid owners. Expect it to meet Ford's minimum 8 year/100,000 mile warranty span and probably be good for 10 or 15 years or 150,000 miles. I can't imagine they would build batteries to two different standards (California and the rest of us).
Prices are going to range from three to five thousand dollars depending on the quality of the battery and labor.
The two hybrid owners (both Toyotas) I know have reported no problems with their original batteries with 90,000+
miles on a late model Camry and close to 150,000+ miles on a older Prius.

Plenty of information on the net about battery replacement and cost. I think temperature is going to affect battery life more than anything.

I wouldn't worry about it. HV batteries are pretty much considered life-of-vehicle parts. If something happens in the first 8 years/100k miles you'll get a new one under warranty. If you have to replace it after that there will likely be a number of refurbished, salvaged, or third party options available at more reasonable prices than what they go for now.

I have a over ten yo Prius with 130k and original hv battery. Still fine, mpg low 40s on avg now, new Maverick does better. Batteries can just fail but can last. Toyota batteries dropped in half during its lifespan now +2K newish replacement.
Mavericks are smaller and different type and fully temperature controlled..
Battery Technology is really moving fast nowadays. Could likely have a replacement with a newer technology before 8yr warranty expires.

Battery fear really only becomes a factor if you drive a lot (over 100k miles per year) or intend to keep the vehicle a long time. 15+ years for many users. My previous vehicle was a Camry Hybrid (MY2008), it was 14 years old and had over 150k miles and was only just starting to show degraded performance. The only thing hybrid vehicles do not like to do is sit, they need to be used to get the most out of the battery. If you are commuting to work 5 days a week, it should be fine for years to come.

I'm going to apologize for a long post and some technical information, but I work with lithium batteries everyday. I can share my experience with lithium batteries.

I believe Ford is using LFP (Lithium-ion Phosphate) batteries which I believe they are producing. I can't find much information on them online, but LFP batteries have been growing in popularity over the last few years because they are safe and have made a lot of technical advancements in life expectancy and charge/discharge rates.

Ford has the ability to control the charge in discharge rates through their system. The engine automatically kicks on to charge the battery when the output current gets too high. Most batteries are required to go through safety and performance testing. Cycle life is established by most companies by constantly cycling the battery from full to depleted at max current rates (100% to 0%). This testing is repeated. Most LFP batteries I have seen on the market have a warranted cycle life between 3000 and 4000 cycles.

Assuming these batteries go through one full cycle each day, an 8 year warranty would cover 2,920 cycles. However, I doubt any battery is going through a full cycle each day unless you are driving all day and everyday. Ford likely establish a typical duty cycle by reviewing data on how customers are driving their other vehicles. Even if you are driving all day, Ford is likely maintaining the true battery SOC (State of Charge) somewhere between 80% and 20%. This extends the life of the battery substantially. Ford's internal battery management software is likely keeping the battery running cooler and not letting the internal resistance of the battery to creep up quickly over time.

All this said, Ford is likely still being conservative with their 8 year/100,000 mile warranty on the battery. All-in-all, it depends on how you drive and how often you drive. Even if the battery does fail, it is a fairly small battery compared to EV batteries which means price should not be "excessive", but I'm sure dealer have a decent mark-up.

Yeah. The battery is one of the things I'm not worried about.

GPSMAN has run tests in his hybrid. You can check his posts. He has as reported mpg in each drive mode. Also reported that ice will cycle on at 30% soc and off at 40% soc of HYB battery. Also in one he reported that at 70% soc of hvb battery the capture of Regen braking was reduced by something like 90% and engine braking would start happening. I believe this would be done to prevent localized heat build up in hvb by high amperage charging but still allow battery to be further. Most certainly this 70% "trigger" point will be reduced somewhat as battery ages, either by bms testing or simply reducing by number of days battery is in use. I do expect the hvb to last much longer than the 8 yr/100k miles before age of battery would result in any significant reduction in mpg. @GPSMan
