I didn't even know a test like this even existed. Is this really necessary? And if it is, why would this vehicle get such a poor rating? Literally anytime you open the door on startup, it chimes like crazy. Say if you put in park, took your seat belt off, and are about to exit the vehicle while it's running, it'll chime three or four times so it's always letting you know that the door is open and the seat belt is unbuckled. Or if you get into your vehicle and start it up without your seat belt, same thing. It'll chime three or four times until you put it on. And when I first got the vehicle, every time I turned it off, the back seat reminder went off, which I turned off myself immediately since no one ever sits in the back seat anyway. Fords in general are very vocal with their seat belt chimes and warning messages in both the gauge cluster and infotainment system. So in my eyes, this should get a passing score.

I only wish that FORD MOTOR Company was as vocal as their seat belt chime. Alas, but FMO is deaf and considering the way they build Broncs Mavericks and Lightenings, they appear to be just plain DUMB.

If the Mavs reminder fails, I would hate to have one that passes. Unlike many, it doesn't really irritate me, but if it was any more it certainly would. What do they want, strobe lights and a siren?

As I stated above - owning a car with the highest rating - I don't really notice that much difference. It must be very technical.

I would think this would be an easy issue to address with a software update.

Unfortunately, that’ll raise insurance rates. Surprising that Ford didn’t put in the effort to get an A—it’s not like it would have taken much effort.
Oddly my insurance rates on my Maverick is less than my 2016 Chevy Cruze.
Note, I have better coverage on the Maverick.

Seatbelt minder makes no sense. I don't know a single person who doesn't wear a seat belt.

I don't know if I have ever even heard the seat belt reminder chime on either one of my vehicles. I just put the belt on automatically without even thinking about it. I could have worse habits I suppose.

This is one of those odd things where I like that someone cares about it and is testing with clearly defined guidelines for what it takes to pass, but I also don't think I care too much that it doesn't pass. Like having an alert for 90 seconds feels aggressive, but at the same time I get having it be long enough that you know someone is being negligent.

It feels like something that should be a quick checkbox when designing the truck, but no one really bothered.

Seriously! What a dumb test. The standards seem pretty subjective.
Somebody probably got sued and they had to make a new standard. That's why we have a majority of federal regulations- because someone died or got sued, or both.
And how on this green earth did it not get an A+?!?! When I turn the key, a seating chart pops up with red in a seat if someone is sitting in it without a seat belt, green if they have their belt on, and an X if no one is sitting in it. AND it stays there until I push "OK"! Cheese & crackers!!! That's more than every car I've ever owned over the last 40 years COMBINED have done! Seriously, that's A++ if you ask me.

I think the new Silverados and Sierras have an immobilizer that checks if the driver's seat belt is unbuckled. Wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're looking for- seat belt isn't buckled, the vehicle either won't move or the transmission shifts out of gear and coasts to a stop.

Also probably worth mentioning, some kids recently carjacked someone, and were ejected when they hit a tree. That's probably the kind of person they're thinking about here. "Yes, my kid was engaged in carjacking, but if there'd been a more in- his- face reminder, he would've remembered his seatbelt!" level of Karen- ness.

I'm gonna need your source on that Silverado thing because I highly doubt that is even legal.

Also, the IIHS spells out exactly how this is tested. So it's not a mystery you have to "be surprised" to learn about. It's on their website for all to see. It has to do with chimes during startup, chimes when a buckled belt is unbuckled, chime volume at idle, chime volume at speed, and chime duration.

I own a car that has the top rating in this category and it is not annoying or intrusive at all.

If I'm trying to maneuver the truck when things are particularly tight, I'll get out and look. When I get back in, since I'm bouncing in and out, I don't buckle back up. And when I don't, the seat belt indicator seems to do its job just fine.

Typically, the seat belt goes on before I start the engine so that's the only time I hear it.

If you want a higher rated seatbelt reminder then drive a Subaru Ascent. The darn warning increases in volume and is continuous the longer its disconnected. The 1/8 mile from the mailbox to the garage can be noisy!
