My beef is dealers don’t want to rebuild. Or their techs don’t know how to do it. My days in auto garage in early 60s we rebuilt most things….starters, generators, alternators, carbs, transmissions, both std and auto, and even engines. Brakes wheel cylinders.

Now if I ask dealer if they could just rebuild…look at me as big green man from Mars.

It's swap until you drop. In the old days we replaced vaccum tubes in TV's, now they replaced circuit boards or just replace the TV. In computers we replaced integrated chips on circuit boards, now the modules just get replaced. Lack of expertise and spiraling labor costs have changed the world.

Just found out from Autonation Ford here in Mobile that my 2022 Maverick needs a new transmission for over $10,000. Apparently one of the gears has gone and there's metal in the transmission fluid. Warranty has expired and I still owe money on that car. I hope people read this and bypass buying any Ford product.

If it's out of warranty, find a good mechanic who'll do a swap for you, and will find a rebuilt or good used tranny. Dealers are nuts with prices.

They rebuilt a lot back then because that was the necessity of the situation of those parts failing or wearing out more often.

A lot of that Detroit iron in the 1980's and back was a major service every 30K miles. Tires, shocks, spark plugs and all fluids front to rear. Plus standard OEM warranties were only 12/12K with people finding themselves out of warranty a lot quicker. Big reason also why people were looking to trade before they hit 100K miles back then.

Dang is the interest rate on a new Maverick 5% now? It was 0-1% (US) and 3.49% (Canada) in 2021 when I ordered.

Of course, anyone with a good investment package is getting over 10% on that same amount of cash, so it's still worth financing.

I know they were asking 9% on some used cars in 2022, but usually new is lower unless you have no credit score at all. Lets be real though, if you have bad credit buying a new car shouldn't even be on your radar.

ETA: 20% Auto rate could be cheap if you bought SanDisk stock 7/28/2025 at $41.89 and sold 6/25/2026 at $2335.00. (FYI I was asleep at that wheel)!

Which transaxles today still have replaceable filters? I don't know of any including the HF45. Most everything will fail at some point no matter how good its reputation is or how good you think it is. Auto manufacturers engineer their products with different performance priorities today than yesterday and manufacturing quality has evolved as well. Many years ago I worked in a dual product line dealership and many more Toyotas were sold than Chevrolet yet the service department was saddled with many more downed Chevys than Toyotas. Today, this same dealership continues to sell more Toyotas than Chevys, but the service department has more downed Toyotas than Chevys. So what's my point here? No matter what anyone thinks or believes, every mechanical product will break down eventually. Some sooner, some later so you roll the dice with every purchase you make. And thank you all for reminding me to change the trans fluid in my wife's car.

Off the top of my head, VW's transmissions, and by extension Audis, all mandate filter replacement. This played a major role in me getting my GLI instead of a Forte GT. Nissan also allows for filter changes on their CVTs.

"things fail eventually" is a strawman argument. I never said things shouldnt ever fail. All mechanical components fail eventually. However, designs that intentionally lead to short service lives are a BAD THING. The lifespan of these transmissions is dramatically shortened (but still out of the warranty period) by the failure to include something as basic as a filter. Nissan got around this by using an external filter that is trivial to change while maintaining the tight packaging required of a modern transverse transmission.

Let us know when you find a car manufacturer that has never had a problem with their transmissions

Let me know when you dont want to be disingenuous. "but everyone else" is not an argument for bad engineering. Other companies having issues with past designs does not justify the planned obsolescence of the 8f35.

Yeah, cars of the 60s had 5 digit odometers for a reason.

All those simple to rebuild machines couldnt make it 100k miles without a rebuild, assuming the car around them didnt rot out before then. Modern hardware is more complicated and, on average, lasts FAR longer then the old stuff.

2.0 & 2.5 issue's are almost unheard of, but you have seen a significant more 8F35 failures ? But isn't that part of a 2.0 ? Sorry but that's a confusing statement.

The 2.0 is an engine, the 8f35 is a transmission. A transmission failure does not mean an engine failure.

Issues with the 2.0 and 2.5 engines are almost unheard of. Both are relatively solid designs. There shouldnt be anything confusing about that statement.

So only check fluid when hot and should be up to the plug. How about when doing a fluid change with room temperature new fluid? Where should the fill line be then?
