I recently went down to Tail of the Dragon with the Civic X forum with a buddy in his Type R (FL5). He runs a Uniden R7 and I was generally impressed with the advanced alert of radar that we received. Multiple times running at high speeds he got alerts 20-30 seconds before we saw a cop.

I'm not really a fast driver and I actually avoid the freeway now during my daily commutes because of the hybrid but I do run some decently high speeds on my way to North Carolina and the coast in the summer. That made me look into and recently purchase an Escort Max 360c mkii. I went with it because has GPS lockout for repeat alerts that are not a radar from law enforcement which is nice in a large and developed city.

So far I've had it alert to officers multiple times in that same 20-30 seconds before we could see them. Just curious if any folks have one and what you're running if you do.

I do plan to tap the power above and run. the cord into that so eventually it should look quite clean.

I don't think I've had a radar detector since the 90's. I'm generally just a smarter driver about when and where I speed and haven't had a speeding ticket since those days. From your description it sounds like the technology has vastly improved as far as false positives, so I'm interested in hearing more.

I haven't used one since I was in the Army. Honestly, I usually just do 75 in a 70. Cop buddy of mine says they won't even put down their coffee for anyone under 10 MPH over unless they appear wreckless.

Mrs. 710-oil-614 got herself a ticket in VA last summer 86 in a 70! I have not had a speeding ticket in probably 20 years but I was impressed enough with the performance of his R7 it made me look into them and then obviously purchase one. There is also an app with Escort that is called Drive Smarter which has known locations of red light cameras (none in my city), speed cameras, etc and then live alerts from other users in the area so it's really a nice 1-2 punch.

Yeah, I try to keep it at +7mph or below on highways and that seems to work. There are other occasions when I'm just out having fun, but that's always on back roads that aren't generally patrolled.

Nice setup! I’m actually running the Uniden R4W right now. The raw range is insane—I’ve had it sniff out Ka-band from miles away before I even saw a cruiser.

Since you’re planning on hardwiring it, you should definitely check out Vortex Radar’s site. He has the best deep-dive settings and mounting guides. It’ll help you dial in the filtering so you aren't getting blinded by Blind Spot Monitors (BSM) while you’re cruising down to NC.

The wire tap above the mirror is the way to go—makes the dash look so much cleaner without that coiled cable hanging down. Safe travels on the summer trips!

Nice! The R4w and the R7 were the other ones I was considering. Generally understood that I gave up a little long range detection with the Escort but gained the plug and play capability and it is a bit quieter as it'll learn my routes locally. I did install Escort's latest firmware update for it which is supposed to greatly improve detection range.

Definitely have been watching a lot of Vortex stuff. I've got a trip down to Charleston, SC coming next weekend so that will be the real test of it I keep it or send it back in favor of an R4w.

It's very easy to run that power cord up and under the trim, then down the A pillar trim and down to the fuse box under the glove box. Add-a-tap completes the installation. Just be mindful to not cross the A pillar air bag and you'll have a clean installation.

On the trim panel above the rear view mirror, pop it off and a couple strokes with a small rat-tail file toward the front lip will provide a groove and allow the wiring to route under the panel and not hold it away from the headliner.

5 minutes to hide all wiring and 10 for the add-a-tap..

Let me know if I can help with a pic or 2.

Glad to hear the firmware update is helping—Vortex definitely swears by those updates. Good luck on the Charleston run! That’ll be the ultimate test for the range vs. quietness trade-off.
Quick question: Which rearview mirror mount did you end up going with? Also, are you using a specific hardwire kit or just a standard mirror tap? I’m looking to clean up my install this week and want to make sure I grab the right parts for the Lariat mirror housing

I run a Uniden R7 in my Mav. I also have a R4 on my motorcycle. The R7 directional arrows and ability to 'tune' the scanning make it hands down the best detector on the market. Minimum of 1/2 mile alerts, sometimes 1 mile with virtually no false alerts. They have saved me and my lead-foot wife many times.

I do not as I usually drive the speed limit or maybe 3-4 over. I'm usually not in a hurry and I really don't give a shit about the people behind me as they can pass if they want. So very little speeding.

Thanks! I plan to do that for my dash cam.

Can tap the power right above the mirror and a small notch in the black cover will allow the cord in.

Just a generic one that uses the magnetic mount.

It doesn’t tuck quite up as far as I’d like but that’s probably as much a function of the Maverick windshield and rear view mirror.

It’s solid and the detector doesn’t move.

Thanks for the link! I was looking for an inexpensive mount and it looks like the one you have they make one for the Uniden R4W series as well.

Just a heads up for Virginia. Only state where they are completely banned.

  • Mounting is Illegal: Even if the device is turned off, mounting it on your windshield or dashboard is a traffic violation.
  • Out-of-State Drivers: The law applies to everyone, regardless of where your vehicle is registered.
  • Penalties: Police officers have the authority to confiscate the device, and you can face fines.
    Uniden America Corporation +3
What to do if you are traveling in Virginia:
If you are passing through or entering Virginia with a radar detector, it must be unplugged and stored completely out of reach (such as in the trunk or in a closed glove compartment) so that it is not readily accessible to anyone in the vehicle.
