I recently went down to Tail of the Dragon with the Civic X forum with a buddy in his Type R (FL5). He runs a Uniden R7 and I was generally impressed with the advanced alert of radar that we received. Multiple times running at high speeds he got alerts 20-30 seconds before we saw a cop.

I'm not really a fast driver and I actually avoid the freeway now during my daily commutes because of the hybrid but I do run some decently high speeds on my way to North Carolina and the coast in the summer. That made me look into and recently purchase an Escort Max 360c mkii. I went with it because has GPS lockout for repeat alerts that are not a radar from law enforcement which is nice in a large and developed city.

So far I've had it alert to officers multiple times in that same 20-30 seconds before we could see them. Just curious if any folks have one and what you're running if you do.

I do plan to tap the power above and run. the cord into that so eventually it should look quite clean.

I quit using my radar detector last year. It took up too much room on the dash.🤷‍♂️

Little town I grew up in had a Fuzzbuster assembly plant in the late 70s. A friend worked there and they could buy factory seconds for half price. He bought 1 and got a ticket a few days later in town for doing 45 in a 25. We ALL knew the local Barney Fife ran radar in that area. Seems his "factory second" had a defective alert circuit, 🤣

It’s really easy to NOT speed. A radar detector would be useless for me.
Not quite true.
A R-D probably isn't for you, not worth the money or trouble, a 10 over ticket once every 30 years isn't that big a deal, blah, blah, blah. But as Shakesbear said in an earlier post "... when the speed limit goes from 70 to 55 to 30 in about 150 yards (also known as "speed traps")..." it's nice to have a warning. If you're dwaddling along at 40 in a 70 zone then I'll need the R-D because I'm going to pass you out of frustration.

OK, I am surprised so many Maverick drivers have radar detectors. Maybe CB radio entertainment is needed? Use to enjoy listening to some crazy stuff. Trying to remember, wasn't a 10-30 code for smokey? And of course the mile marker.

Those were the days! My handle was "Space Trucker". An homage to one of my favorite classic rock bands "Deep Purple". Also tied to my hometown Houston, also known as "Space City". Say Ref, my daughter and son-in-law live in Auburn/Opelika. Great area! I'll be there in mid-August to see my third granddaughter born ;)

"It’s really easy to NOT speed." :frown:

If you drive an interstate highway at or below the limit in most states I've driven in, you will be mowed down! Seems like the police have no issues with 10/20+ over 'suggested limit'.

I don't think I've had a radar detector since the 90's. I'm generally just a smarter driver about when and where I speed and haven't had a speeding ticket since those days. From your description it sounds like the technology has vastly improved as far as false positives, so I'm interested in hearing more.
Good advice. Seems that younger drivers are of the opinion they don't have much time, so speeding is "normal'., whereby us older drivers think we have all the time in the world.

At 79, I realize my time is limited so I speed to waste the least amount of my life in the car.

I disagree.
Today's vehicles have made huge advances in suspensions, brakes, tires, and overall road feel. I remember being terrified at driving 65mph in a 1970 Mercury Comet. I felt less driving and more "hanging on". My point being it feels easier and safer to drive higher speeds in modern automobiles.

As a retired lead foot, my experience was that while radar detectors can be useful in some situations (the cop shoots a vehicle 1/4 mile ahead) radar is normally left off.

In fact, legally it is only supposed to be used to confirm a visual estimation of speed. Some cops may leave it running with an alarm set for whatever speed they feel warrants a ticket, but many hide (on say an onramp) and only shoot the occasional car traveling at "a high rate of fuel consumption." The radar beam is traveling away from approaching cars. IOW, there's a good chance there will be no warning at all, even with the best detector.

Also, they sometimes use VASCAR. There's nothing to detect.

In addition, sadly, more depts are using either completely unmarked cars and/or marked cars that are not identifiable unless they are right beside you. They are easy to pass.

In short, you WILL get caught. I used RADAR detectors and a CB radio continuously. I had the same commute for 25 years and knew the usual hiding places. I managed to keep my license, but just barely.

Although I rarely drive anymore (by choice, except RV tips) I still wish we had a system like Germany -- strict licensing requirements, thorough vehicle inspections, and sections of open rural interstate with no speed limit.

While we're waiting for that to happen, my advice is to use the "10% rule" -- i.e., run 77 (or less) in a 70 mph zone.

That doesn't mean you can't have fun, but limit it to deserted back roads. You might still get lit up, but the chance is generally lower.

I like spending time in my Maverick. I'm usually alone, I can listen to whatever music/podcast, or I can just drive in silence. Therapy.
