Sign of Possible Transmission Failure

So, I'm rolling up to my driveway and had to pull up to the side since I have a Mi-Box storage pod in the way blocking the garage door's reception. After getting it open, when I put my truck in reverse, it clunked into gear which it's never done before. Putting it into drive and park was fine but I did not like what it did in reverse.

Isn't that a sign of transmission failure? I've heard that's a common issue with the EB 8-speeds. It only has a little over 12,000 miles and I treat the transmission like glass for that reason. I'm not one of those types who puts it in gear while it's still rolling. I make sure to come to a complete stop before changing gear.

Ironically, I was thinking to myself how good of a truck it's been and then this happens right afterwards. Hopefully I didn't jinx it.

I wouldn't worry about it yet. The shifting on modern transmissions can be "interesting" to say the least.

That being said, I think it's the weakest point of the EB builds because I love the EcoBoost.

Not necessarily - a lot of factors come into play. Is where you stopped on an incline? Sometimes a clunk is just a clunk....I would keep an ear on it and if it does it again, get it to the dealer and see what they think...

When i park my truck, I put it in "N", then set the parking brake, then put it in Park. This way there is no binding under its own weight forwards or backwards, witch will result in a thud at times. Not sure if that is what you are talking about, but either way...

Won't keeping your foot on the brake pedal do the same thing without the "N" step?

Maybe, but when I put it in Neutral, I let my foot off the brake for a brief moment. I'm not saying its how it should be done, its just a habit I've had for the last 35 years and i dont get binding clunks when shifting into F or R. I'm sure we all have our own "oddities"

Get your “bubble level” out and check if your driveway is completely flat. If not, and your parking brake was not set, a thunk is completely normal. Not good - but normal.

Note…even if your driveway measures completely flat - don’t rule out that your driveway is located above a gravity anomaly. My dad brought a level & magnet to the “Mystery Spot” and confirmed the anomaly 😳

moral of the story - always set your parking brake before putting into Park.
