I am two months into owning and daily driving a 2025 Hybrid AWD. All of the reviews, window sticker, and published data indicated that I would be getting 37 mpg combined city/highway. Well, that is my daily routine - about 50% city and 50%highway based on total miles driven. The city may not be bumper to bumper like New York traffic, but there are plenty of stop signs and lights with average speeds around 35 mph.

I am only seeing 32 mpg on my short and long term trip computers readings.

I do not use the Economy mode because the vehicle is pretty slow already. And I am not pounding the pedal constantly to race it around. Pretty normal stuff and not loading the bed or towing (yet).

I have about 1,200 miles on it so far. Thought it might get better over time, but has not. Also, I notice that the 2.5 liter gas engine is on far more than I would have expected. Stays off on very slow starts up to about 10 mph, then the ICE kicks in.

What is going on here? Am I doing something wrong? Any suggestions? Can Ford make any changes to improves this?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Neil
Our ecoboost can get that sometimes, I'd have the dealer check it out. Having said that, its still decent mileage for a half a truck, as my wife like to call hers 😆

I had a Fusion PHEV prior to my Maverick. When driving gently rolling hills my MPG increased a significant amount over driving flat land. I'm sure that was because the terrain was kind of simulating pulse and glide.

I really think these hybrid manufactures could simulate that engine load while maintaining a constant speed by charging (pulse) and then using (glide) the HVB.

Fuel economy does not increase over time. The engine doesn't 'loosen up'.
yeah, the whole "breaking in" thang was way back before CAD/CAM was used to make vehicles. The tolerances in drivetrain components are so tight right from the factory floor that there is very little "breaking in" of smoothing away high spots and filling in low spots. Since 90% of Maverick owners are senior citizens (like me) according to someone's poll on this forum, it's a hard concept to break and get with the times. Like people still wanting to change their oil (for the same old low tolerance pre-CAD/CAM reasons) every 1500-3000 miles when 10,000 mile oil shows little breakdown from new under normal driving conditions.

The main contributors to MPG gain or loss among identical vehicles are driving style, and total vehicle weight. If you've got a couple hundred pounds of tools and gear in there, your MPG will be lower.

skippable anecdotes: I notice about a 3-5 MPG drop on longer highway drives when I have a second person riding with me; and their stuff. That would probably total 150-175lbs that I don't usually have in there, her and her voluminous packing of every conceivable outfit and products. I barely have room to throw in my own dufflebag. Oh wait, I also have the 12vdc fridge/cooler on those trips, so maybe it's 250 total extra pounds above just me tooling around by myself. My 70mph+ average drive for 500 miles from CA to OR is usually about 42-3mpg, but drops to 38 with passenger+stuff. I just did this drive with a couple hundred pounds of tools and it was 38. But, I also have FWD, not the AWD of the author of this thread.

It's going on two weeks since I picked up my '25 Lariat Hybrid. They say numbers don't lie and if what these numbers are saying is true, I'll have logged 553 miles on the very first tank. Works for me and my wallet! Color me one happy Maver. Ford Maverick Loving the Mileage Mileage in Maverick

Seems he has better control over his right foot. Only a little over 200 miles on his Mavbrid.

Thats very interesting thought but totally incorrect. It took about 12K miles for my ecoboost to get the metal bits to finally mesh together properly and now I get on average 28 MPG (AWD FX4 4K tow) The 4K towing has lower gears; and has higher RPM's.

I think the OP was expecting what the FWD Hybrid gets. Adding in the AWD does take away a lil MPG as well. If he has 4K this makes total sense to me but 32 is NOT a BAD MPG at all.

ICE runs more in cold weather to provide heat... turn down the cabin temperature and use heated seats/steering wheel if equipped to minimize this.

Turn on the EV coach to help you optimize your battery run time. Get up to speed and let off the gas momentarily and ease back on to kick it into EV mode.

The fuel economy improves as you break in the engine, you should have a full break in by 5,000 miles.

You can just push the go pedal and not worry about it in the hybrid and the mileage is fine. Some people enjoy pushing vehicles to their limits. If someone here was posting about everything they do to get good lap times in their Lobo, I wouldn't make a sassy remark about how easy the Hybrid is to drive in comparison.

Let people enjoy things.

Just another quick reminder that this thread is in the 2.5L Hybrid sub-forum for the folks that don't bother with checking where they are.

Typically run with L selected in town to maximize the battery charge and use, with adaptive cruise and set to 4 bars separation I rarely use the brake in town as I one pedal drive. If no vehicle in front then I have to brake. Might need to add an option for a flashing 3rd brake light to warn others I am slowing, I assume the lights only come on when I rarely hit the brakes.

2025 AWD Lariat Hybrid with passenger and some AC going till higher elevations. Currently at 1200 miles, non-4k tow.

Roadtrip-
250 feet to over 8900 feet and down into Tahoe, 30mpg
Kirkwood down to Sutter Creek pegged at 99.9mpg and added to total tank to empty.
Sutter Creek Foothills to Roseville over 46mpg.
In town, 45mph roads around 46mpg.

Pictures attached with mileage.
Bonus picture on the daytrip of fall colors on CA88 Red Lake Cabin for tiur enjoyment.

Sure i get it.
BUT me not going to use Pulse Drive Technique, (throttle /coast)
or minimize using the heater or a/c to reward my mpg.

Don't know if everybody has to use an altered driving technique to achieve the 40 MPG.
So...
For the OP it May be frustrating to find that they May have to alter the way they drive to get mpg they expected.
In my case, I drove it like any other car, and I got 48 mpg's (indicated) on my drive back from the dealer...

This is normal it happens to ALL Maverick hybrids before they are fully broken in, until you get the engine broken in, that is what you get 30-33mpg

1200 miles it could say 25mpg and its breakin period running rich,
Dont even look at mpg until absolute earliest 2000 miles its always gonna be high running richer to help the breakin process (cooler combustion)

it took me 3000 miles to see it drop with 90% commuting, if you want it tp break in faster youll need some higher rpm highway driving (obviously make sure the engine is warmed up in the operating band before highway speeds, but it needs a bit of throttle, high cylinder pressures is what break in the piston rings)
my average mpg has slowly climbed from 30mpg at 2000 miles to 40.9 mpg at 12,000 miles & I was at 42mpg at 10,000 miles but the cold coupled with a bunch of short 8 mile drives = engine never fully gets to operating temperature so is burning more gas until it does.
Its the 30 mile commute at 45mph I have seen 60mpg sometimes, engine has got to get up to operating temperature

But the driver does.

And the learnable settings get refined.
Shoot… your mileage should be better. Just stay on battery the whole time.!!! Sure… your flashers are gonna be on the entire time…but they can go around. You just keep yelling “Don’t like my driving. Stay off the sidewalk.”😂😂😂
Dude no, thats exactly what my 2025 hybrid awd was getting January new, 30mpg on the highway I posted here freaking out, 2500 miles the mpg started getting way better by 3000 miles I was getting 50 & 60 mpg around town.

PCU runs a richer fuel-air mix until piston rings are fully broken in, this is exactly what happened to me.

You seem to think Maverick hybrids fuel air mix is regulated by a 1970s carberator, all else equal a richer fuel-air mix is cooler combustion which is why the ECU runs a richer mix until the piston rings fully seat & wear in.

These are also not grandpa's piston rings, they are a hardened alloy with a soft outer layer, the soft outer layer is designed to wear rapidly during breakin, & then go to virtually nothing trace amounts, motor oil geek says any wear analysis comparing oils before 10,000 miles is useless as a comparison because for any oil the wear rate is rapidly going down from a high amount the 1st 2000 miles is something like 75% all piston ring wear for the life of a well maintained engine engine

I drive my 2025 AWD 4K tow Hybrid Maverick in ECO mode 95% of the time. Now with 9,500 total miles my overall MPG is 43.8 with highway -vs- city miles about 30%H & 70%C. I do limit my highway speed to 60-65 mph. Most my city driving is 30-45 mph. I think the key to great MPG is not driving about 65 and very smooth on the gas & brake. When using
