I had a Chevy Vega where I got one quart of oil to every 100 miles of travel :}As late as the late 1970's it wasn't considered excessive oil consumption requiring repair unless it was greater than 1 qt/500 miles. The owner manual stated to check the oil every fill up. Today Ford will allow us to repair an engine if it's greater than 1 qt/3000. And most people have the EXPECTATION that they will not have to add ANY oil between oil changes. The owner guide now just simply say to check oil periodically.
