My 2024 Ecoboost runs the same on regular and premium. I see a small average mpg gain, say 2 or 3 % with premium and that’s a maybe.
No noticeable power difference but I don’t drive it in the upper third of the power band, ever.
I never go over 5,000 rpm.
Except for the time I forgot I had it in low. I hit 5,400 before I noticed it.
:’P

Any way, for chits and giggles I put on a fuel load of what I like to call
Real Gasoline.
NON Ethanol 93 octane.

My Mav is just bit different.

I’m not going to say how. I’m looking for other peoples input, thoughts, opinions and results.

I paid $3.54 a gallon.
My regular is running $2.64
And my Ethanol premium is $3.39 a gallon.

Penny for your thoughts ?

I run non-ethanol fuel in my truck. It's what's available around me, I live rural around farms so lots of off-road diesel and non-ethanol gas

Gas has higher energy per volume than ethanol so your fuel economy should be a bit better

Add some ethanol premium to it and your octane will be even higher. That's a good buy compared to here, most stations around here are $.80@ gallon more for just Non-ethanol regular 87 octane.

I think the butt-dyno actually is correct here. Even running just pump 93 vs 87, I've noticed the Mav feels just ever-so more peppy.

Makes sense though. Whether it's pump 93 or non-ethanol (I call it rec) 93, the truck can run more timing advance and a couple extra pounds of boost. So, I'm not surprised at all that it feels different, in a good way!

Yup. Since ethanol burns cooler than gasoline, it raises the octane rating of the gas it's mixed with. The gasoline used in ethanol-blend 93 isn't 93 octane by itself, it becomes 93 with the ethanol's octane boost, whereas non-ethanol 93 is a higher quality gasoline to start with and it contains more energy per gallon than ethanol mix

There's a station near me that has 93 non-ethanol. I normally run it in my dirt bike. Might give it a shot in the Mav to see if I can tell a difference. It's $$$ here though!

You should definitely feel some extra power and better fuel economy to boot! That's the beauty of modern turbo engines, they'll make the most out of quality fuel.

My friend has a modified Audi RS7, when he fills it with 106 octane race fuel and switches to the RACE map it's putting out 800+ horsepower and it's just violent! Floor it at 70 MPH and it explodes forward, hammering you into the seat like you're being shot out of a cannon 😄

But the real question is....

DOES the truck run more timing advance, or does it simply retard timing AFTER hearing knock?

I have not yet seen a post where someone proved and documented any timing advance automatically, simply by adding a different fuel.

It's the other way around

The engine is rated for full power with 93 - 94 octane, but it backs off timing (and power) when it detects preignition from lower octane gas

Plain and simple your Ecoboost is mapped to run on 91 octane (w/ethanol).

Using 87 octane, you are not getting the 250hp / 277 lb ft of torque. You are getting somewhere between 10-15% less power.

Filling with anything above 91 with provide zero additional benefits, including ethanol free 93, above the 91 octane.

There are no efficiency gains to be had by going from 87 to 91-93, only power gains.

It is often referred to as “butt dyno” and it is wholly subjective and completely inaccurate.

Additionally your engine (and modules) will take a few tanks to adjust and acclimate to different octanes. One tank isn’t enough to realize for differences.

I suggest that you download Draggy and some objective benchmarking and testing to show what the real difference is.

Regardless if you do or don’t - running on 87 means you’re only getting 85-90% of your ecoboosts stated power ratings.

Right and all that.

But drivers ALMOST NEVER push their vehicles past the 85% output mark. Therefore 87 octane is fine for 99% of people 99% of the time.

220 HP gets you to work in 100% the same amount of time as 250 HP 99.9% of time.

That's a better way to put it actually. Yes, timing is pulled back once knock is sensed on a lower octane fuel. In other words, the truck is running less spark advance on 87, relative to what it can do on 93.

That is not how it works.
