I am looking for a way to keep items near the tailgate for temporary storage in my 2025 Lariat with a bed cover. Any suggestions

I keep one of those spring loaded adjustable shower curtain rods in the bed for just that purpose. It works well for most loads, although a really heavy item will probably bend it in half 😄

ETA: you can also cut a 2×6 to fit in the side bed pockets if a sturdier option is needed.

I have a spray in bedliner that keeps the majority of items were they are unless my driving habit has changed. Having a flex bed just a properly cut to length 2x6 in the first set of slots makes a difference divider or divides the bed up to keep things near the tailgate.

I liked that and was planning on that before taking delivery. Afterwards many items that I keep in the bed jack stand, hydraulic jack, jack's handle, hitch extension, two hitch receivers all stay in place. The only item is the jack sometimes rolls forward. I keep a 1x2 with a screw for a hook from my F150 in the back. It lays flat to the side for easy access and allow large items to stack on top. The few times may be twice in a year that it has rolled forward I ha e used that stick to easily bring it back. So I never actually used a 2x6 or found a need to divide the bed. I'm thinking the spray in bedliner is the reason for this. Or I have been driving really, really good LOL.

I have a pull-out tray that gives me more storage area than a 2x6 would give me in the cut-out area.
Like me, it ain't pretty but it's still functional. It's no show truck.

It holds more than using a 2x6 across.

In less than 30 seconds you can pull the 2 side brackets out and it lays flat for large items. You don't have to find a place to store it, if you need to use the whole bed, like you would a bed extender.

It pulls out for easy unloading.

I tried the 2X6. Too heavy for me and cumbersome even with the hinge. It only gives you 15 inches of space and stuff still fell over the top it's just not enough storage for me.
And I still had a bend over the tailgate in order to remove the items.

I found the extending bars to still allow stuff to slide underneath.

I got a 2x10 from Home Depot and cut it to 54.25". Fits across the bed and into the slots on the sides perfectly.

Ford's sliding bed divider works really well for that. You also need to have the Cargo Management System rails to mount it. It's a little pricey compared to a 2 x 6, but it's really nice and works great.

I bought a cargo net that spans across the bed. It's great for groceries, etc. It's inexpensive and keeps everything in place.

I like a basic ratcheting cargo bar. Combined with some collapsible storage crates, it handles loose items and can be quickly reconfigured on the fly to stow bigger stuff.

This is exactly what I do, and I use the collapsible InstaCrates as well. I combine those with milk crates at times (usually to hold a 20lb propane tank or heavy recovery gear) and coolers. I use RopeRatchets to secure the crates/coolers to the bed and the cargo bar to keep them in place.

The cargo bar can be located anywhere, but it locks really tightly into the flexbed slots.

Combining this with c-channel tie-down rails will allow you to tie items down in virtually any configuration:
