Purchasing Maverick that was reacquired by Ford - updated

Hello everyone. I'm looking into purchasing a 24 XL hybrid. One of them that I came across shows on the carfax that it was reacquired by ford at one point. The reason given was "No start". The next entry on carfax shows other basic service, but nothing addressing that particular issue. When I talked to the salesperson, she asked the manager, and supposedly it just needed a software update. Not sure I believe her. There are currently no open recalls on it, as they completed the back up cam recall yesterday after i talked to them.

Is there a way to find out what the actual issue was, and if it was addressed? The truck has <10k on it, and looks good otherwise.


Update - i had moved on from it, but someone else bought it in the last day or so. Or the dealer took it off the lot. Either way, it's no longer available.

Now just waiting for the right deal on a new 24 or 25 XL.

So it sounds like bought back under lemon law? Personally I'd avoid a known problem vehicle. Even if it turns out the issue was fixed, I feel I'd be worried about it for too long.

You may want to check on insurance before making the purchase too. Insurance costs on a manufacturer buy back vehicle may negate any savings in the purchase price and end up costing you more in the long run.

And no, do not trust the dealer. There’s a reason they want it off their hands and they’ll tell you whatever they need to in order to get it off the lot. Ask me how I know…

I’d be very leery, at least get ford service history on the vin, would think they would show owner issue and service performed. Dealer should be able to pull service history records

All depends on the asking price and if they would include an extended warranty at no cost.

Anything can be fixed (except for the 12v battery charging issue, so far)

It depends on what the buyback reason was. For example, all of these back-up camera issues could have triggered lemon law in some states. The fix is literally just a software update.

Personally, I would avoid it simply because I could find another used one that doesn't have that history.

Semi related - Are the 24's & 25"s also prone to the cv axle issue? Wife is doing everything to keep me from getting a Maverick. All the recalls and the axle issue are not helping.

I had a dodge van years ago. I invoked the Ohio lemon law. Chrysler called and offered to buy the van back if I withdrew the lemon law complaint. Worked out well for me. I had 15 months and 15,000 miles.i paid the difference in the sticker price which came to about $500.

I later learned that if the manufacturer loses a lemon law case, they are obligated to share what the issue was.

when I was having issues on the original van (brakes kept going out) the service manager pulled up the service history. I found out that there were a couple of unrelated fixes that were done before I bought the van.

if you decide to get this particular true I’d recommend you ask for a printout of the full service history.

I bought a Cadillac XT5 that was bought back by lemon law. Got a great deal on it, and kept the remaining warranty.

It was a problem with the gear shifter (joystick shifter) where the release button had two separate contacts below the button that had to have equal contact. Well, most people press the side, etc. And it would cause the computer to be unable to take it out of park. This was a design flaw. They had a few software updates to try and let it work with just one contact working. But the original owner brought it in three times for the same problem and that gave him the option to lemon law it.

I got a $48k vehicle for $34k and only had sometime like 6k miles on it in 7 or 8 months. HOWEVER, it twice went to the shop for the same exact problem. The first time, they did another software update. Second time it was towed there, on their dime. And they replaced the joystick with a new one. It worked after that the rest of the time I owned it.

Just make sure you still get the lemon law rights. For me, it's 3x returned for the same problem and not fixing the problem, and it's eligible for lemon law.

Really depends on the price they're offering. No start sounds like that battery issue some Mavs experienced with the terminal, wire, or a parasitic drain on the battery. Should be fixed. But if you have the option to lemon law a vehicle YOU ALWAYS ACCEPT THE BUYBACK. You'll usually get far more back than the true value of the vehicle at that point.

The '24s (at least the early ones) still have the weaker CV axles AFAIK. The '25s should all have the upgraded CV axles, but we will not know for sure if they're good enough for many miles.

You could always try reverse psychology. Tell the wife you now have the hots for a F150 Lightning for $80,000. Then stand back and see if suddenly she's a Maverick fan?

OTOH, wives are always smarter than us. She'll sniff it out because of the way a wrinkle rises at the far left corner of your forehead.

Our original plan was to buy a new vehicle by the end of the year. She would get the new car and i would get her old one, a 2017 CRV exl. Wasn't excited about it at all, but doing it for the sake of the family lol. However, she was in a car accident a few weeks ago (she's fine), so that changed all of that.

We bought her a 2025 CRV Exl. I wanted the Hybrid, because it's hybrid and they look tons better than the non hybrid versions. I currently drive a 2012 Volvo S60 Rdesign with 167k and it's becoming the money pit that they do. It's actually in the shop right now getting $1700 worth of work done, and there's much more that should be fixed, but not super necessary. She knows i've really liked the Mavs for awhile so she was open to it, but since then she has researched and seen all the issues with some of them.

Her "counter offer" is to purchase a 2022 CRV exl for herself, because there are a couple features she misses from that generation, and I drive the 2025. She doesn't care about it being the older gen, as she still rocks an iphone 11 cause it still works lol. I know the CR V is the "better" vehicle, but it's just so boring. The other option is to keep my car for at least another year to see how these 2025s are holding up, then revisit it.

The smart play is to take the honda, but my heart is set on the Maverick. I do love my Volvo, but i'm getting to the point i'd rather it become someone else's headache. ugh.
