2024 Hybrid - Auto Start/Stop not working

As others have said, the hybrid is not a true start/stop setup. The ICE will run to keep state of charge in an acceptable range. Both your HV battery and 12v will impact this (even if indirectly).

The more you draw from either battery, the more you will notice the ICE running. In cold weather, you're likely running HVAC more which will more quickly call for the ICE to charge up the battery.

On a "warm" day we had recently where it was roughly 50*F, the ICE basically always shut off at stops. Today, we struggled to get above 0*F and the ICE was running most of the time.

It sounds like it's working fine and just working differently from how I expected.
I'm going to do a map update tomorrow which requires the car to be running for around an hour. I will take it for a drive, turn everything off and see what happens.

Based on what I'm reading, I think my expectations were off, but I'm curious if you've noticed if it turns off at lights and if you've noticed a change in the colder weather?

I'm sorry if you posted this, but I missed it. What temperature do you have your heat set to? You could test turning off any HVAC settings and see if it does what you expect.

I think the heat is normally set to 70, both sides, then I turn it down as things worm up. Could turn it down some as the steering wheel and seat(s) are usually on.

Yes, I believe and did not so state that the brake/hold may not actually stop the ice itself. The ice should turn off if generator does not need to run when power gage drops below 10%. It will start as soon as the go pedal is pressed fast enough to call for 10% or more power.

Do this, on the home screen there is a little noticed 'electric bolt' symbol. Click on it. It will give you a graphic of the power movement in your car and it will also tell you why the gas engine is running.

In all the forum entries I have looked at, people are trying to disable start/stop. The answer is always that it can be done with the Ecoboost engine, but start/stop is how hybrids work. Mine never autostops. I cannot believe it is normal.

In many cases with the Hybrid, the gasoline engine is already stopped before you get to a red light. Some exceptions are:
1. It's cold and you have the heater on. The heater uses waste heat from the gasoline engine, so it's often on for just this reason.
2. The HV battery's charge is low is being charged by the gasoline engine.
3. The electric air conditioner caused #2 to happen.

Tap "Apps" in the bottom bar of Sync 3, then "Power Flow" OR the "home" icon, then the rectangular button on the right side of the screen with a lightning bolt on it. It will display the below screen to tell you why the engine is on.
"Drive Mode" = you're in Sport or Tow/Haul mode.
"Normal Operation" = the batteries are low, or the coolant isn't up to temperature.
"Drive Power" = you're commanding more acceleration than the hybrid battery + motor can provide.
"Heater setting" = the coolant isn't warm enough for your desired heater setting.

Engine running at stop lights, especially when cold, is normal. As others mentioned it depends on the coolant temp, heater setting, and battery charge levels.

Your MPG also sounds normal for peak New England winter. Expect low 40's when spring comes around.

All manufacturers decide what attributes are necessary when they are designing these systems. Honda seems to have decided the ICE stops at lights. Ford decided that this was not necessary.

My 2012 Volt also did not shut the ICE engine off at a stop after the battery reached its 30 per cent charge level. When driving electrically, the ICE engine only turned on if the weather was very cold (ERDTT, engine running due to temperature) or if Maintence Mode was triggered after not running the ICE because most of the driving over a period of time had been purely electric.

Just like the lack of standards for electric vehicle charging are all over the place (hopefully NACS will win in North America), hybrids and electric vehicles follow whatever standards manufacturers decide will work best for their customers.

There is nothing wrong with your car. It is not a Honda.

you can also sort of boost internal heat by (if you usually drive on your own) by shutting down the vents on the right AND by pushing the 'recirc' button - pushing that button seems to increase output by about 20 percent (like it does when you're running the a/c). Don't know if it does anything to increase any mileage but you will get a stronger stream of warmer air.

I'm reading all this, and absolutely love how well my dealer sales person explained everything. The start/stop and hybrid are two totally different systems. The ECO mode will charge the battery every time you take your foot off the gas, and use the brakes. The engine will shut off. It won't necessarily start when you start again because there is enough battery power to drive off. If you accelerate hard, the engine will start immediately. A lot of it depends on how you drive as well. Sounds to me like everything is working properly.
