Your question has been answered above - truck is behaving normal. What I can add is if it is cold and you are running your heater your ICE will run LOTS! When I am in electric mode and I turn on my heat I can watch my engine temp drop rapidly and the ICE turns on. That is why many of us trying to stretch MPG drive around with seat and steering wheel heaters on and minimize use of the HVAC.

Honestly, I'm not trying to be critical, but... "scary and annoying"??? What is scary about that? And "I wouldn't have bought it if that's how it works."??? It seems to me that everything we buy from a vehicle to a lamp has it's particular traits and we just get used to them... well, yeah, if something it onerously bad then maybe return it and get something else. Are these traits onerously bad?
For me, autostop is the main feature of a hybrid. I love not wasting gas sitting at lights. It's really all my Civic did, and I loved it. It would be a major disappointment if the Maverick doesn't do that. If it gets the designated mileage without start/stop, I'll be okay. There is much I love about the truck. I don't see dealer allowing me to return it, so that isn't an option. "Scary and annoying" is out there. I get your point and no offense taken. It's just not what I was expecting or wanted. I'm annoyed with myself for missing that. Based on what I'm reading here, my expectations were incorrect, but I'm not giving up total hope yet. It's like I wanted an F150 Lightning and got this. Not really what I wanted, but it's still very nice.

the only thing I didn't see mentioned here is that if you have max heat selected the ICE will continuously run.

it's cold and getting colder for the next 5-7 days so be prepared for the ICE to run plenty more. you will get advertised mpg after the temps are in the 50s and above.

F-150 lightning is at least 2x the price, so ... you can want a lot of things, but you own a hybrid Maverick. I have a feeling if you had the Lightning you'd be on their forums complaining about range.

Well Dana, I can't tell you for sure the mileage, It's been cold and crappy since I got my Maverick on 3 Jan, but my Escape has the same basic drive train package and during the last Spring, Summer, and Fall it was averaging 39.4 to 39.9 MPG the whole time. Right now the Mav is running on the 35 range. I'm expecting it to improve w/ warmer weather. So far I'm very pleased w/ both vehicles.

I was actually one of the first people to reserve one. I put $100 down for a $37000 advertised price on the base model. A year and a half later they said I could order it for $54000. I swore off Fords at that point. Now there's the only compact hybrid pickup. Funny how things work out. Ultimately, if it gets near the advertised mileage, I don't care how it does it. I was just (still am) shocked that it's not autostopping. Fingers crossed. I do really like it.

how could you still be shocked about that after everyone explained how and why it can do that?

Cory,
My Civic didn't do as well in the cold weather, so I'm expecting it to be lower. 35 is still pretty good. My old pickup got 13. :)
I'll be filling up tomorrow. The dash currently says 31.3. I'll see.

Have you noticed if yours autostops?

in the warmer months you'll easily get 42-45MPG - a full stop/start would result in about 10 percent improvement, if you drive 12K miles a year at 4 bucks a gallon thats about 1100$ a year in gas - a 10 percent improvement would be a savings of $110 - less than 9 bucks a month. That's certainly not a lot of $ - wouldn't lose too much sleep over 9 bucks a month, it's less than a pizza. If you really wanted to get it at max efficiency then I guess you can just manually stop/start it at a stop though I would venture that life is too short to be doing all of that just to save under 10 bucks a month.

At that mileage, I could care less how it got it.
I'm ready for the warmer weather regardless. :)
You've obviously had yours for a while. Have you noticed whether it autstops?
If it does, does it do it more in warm weather?

I'm sorry if you posted this, but I missed it. What temperature do you have your heat set to? You could test turning off any HVAC settings and see if it does what you expect.

DJ.
Thanks. I've got a few things to try tomorrow.
I've got the map update. They say it takes an hour, so I've got lots of time to try things.

I have a xlt hybrid and I use to pay attention to when the engine ran and when it didn't. Once I learned the parameters under which it operates I just let it do it's thing. The only time it will run all the time is if I put it in sport mode. In sport mode it always runs and it fakes gear shifts too. In normal mode it runs alot more to provide heat in the winter and much less in the summer. It runs to to charge the battery and to provide drive power. Since the engine starts via the CVT and not a traditional starter I don't worry about wearing one of those out. I find the system would really well and I just let it go about it's business.

It is common to have it run when stopped, one to provide heat and the other to provide charging for the battery. In the summer (not calling for heat) it almost always turns off when stopped at a red light etc. .

Had it since oct '22 - really, consistently up to 45 or so in the warmer months, now in the winter it goes down to about 35, I do pretty much all city driving. The only thing I notice is when it swaps from gas (prevalent on start up in cold months) to electric after it warms up. I never paid attention to what it does in the interim, I don't react (anymore) to when the relays seem to activate on their own after I shut if off, the truck just does what it does based on whatever algorithms are being deployed via the BCM. I run mine in 'normal' mode all the time except when I put it in 'slippery' so I never (except for a few times) put it in ECO mode to get any autostop functions. I like the way it drives in 'normal' when I had it in ECO eh the ride was less enjoyable. So for me having a more enjoyable driving experience outweighs any additional MPG I might have gotten when in ECO mode. But that's just me and...I'm old :}

I've really never noticed. Once in a while I feel that little shudder of it starting up when I leave a light or stop sign and assume that's the ICE kicking in. Before my Escape I had never owned or drove a hybrid or a vehicle that had the auto stop feature so it's all been a new experience and I've just been going w/ the flow.

As others have said, the hybrid is not a true start/stop setup. The ICE will run to keep state of charge in an acceptable range. Both your HV battery and 12v will impact this (even if indirectly).

The more you draw from either battery, the more you will notice the ICE running. In cold weather, you're likely running HVAC more which will more quickly call for the ICE to charge up the battery.

On a "warm" day we had recently where it was roughly 50*F, the ICE basically always shut off at stops. Today, we struggled to get above 0*F and the ICE was running most of the time.
