Sure don’t want to run down road with 6 to 8 foot of lumber sticking out back of truck bed.
This is how I use to haul long lumber in my Prius. Odd that no one can design and market a utility vehicle that actually meets the largest mass residential market. Also odd if I hauled this in my Prius I could actually close the hatchback. Guess we will just continue to make do with whatever vehicle we have. 🤓

Why not, that's why Ford made the flex bed. Stop thinking it's a car, and treat it for what it is, a truck.

All I can say is yikes. 🤣 Wood in the cab that will shoot out the window under emergency braking or an accident? Check. Useless bungee cords? Check. Well done!
...but you forgot that he pulled on the bungees and they went 'twang' and therefore said "that'll do".

I have hauled 8 ft. lumber several times in the bed of my Maverick. I only sticks out 2 feet beyond the tailgate (when tailgate is in the down position). No problems whatsoever!

If just hauling a few pieces, 6 foot fits in the bed diagonally with the tailgate up.

No. Just no. Let it stick out the back and tie it down with a flag on the back.

Hauled 150+, 8ft studs.

Tie em down properly, no issues.

Invest in some ratchet straps. I'd recommend the retractable ones for ease of use.

Throw the bungee cords in the trash.

Or if you're really concerned buy a hitch load extender/support.

Yes☝ This.
Here is my setup includes a set of trailer lights. Hauled 12' easily and probably could go as long as 16'.

If the tailgate is down there is 6.5 feet of decking for 'cargo'. with 8 foot lumber, that's only 1.5 foot overhang. I'd fold the tailgate down and save myself a windshield.
