64 1/2 Mustang prolly had less recalls and better build quality for the time period.
well that's a sure thing given that the NHTSA first created recalls in 1966. prior to that, recalls were voluntary and I don't believe that there were any done on the '64 Mustang. it is known that 1st gen Mustangs have a fuel tank vulnerable to rear-end crashes, but there was no government mandated safety testing back then, either.

I live in New York State and plan to drive my Mav in the winter, so unless you collect rust, you won't want my truck in 20 years. 😬

Yes, I think I remember hearing that about the gas tanks. I’m sure other Ford vehicles for that time period have the same safety issue. I remember a lot of modders would put in a racing fuel tank which was around $550 over 20 yrs ago but I always kept the regular one in my 65’

The other thing is that even collectable cars are money pits. Think about how much it would cost to buy a car today and keep it for 30 years, hoping it might quadruple in value. You'd have to keep the miles low, so that means not a lot of driving and enjoying it -- you'll need to take on the financial burden of a second vehicle for those entire 30 years.

That also means that the collectable car has to stay clean and rust free, so that requires a garage for 30 years. How's that going to impact the rest of the choices you make in life - where to live, how much house you can afford, should you take a better job if it means moving and giving up your garage?

And your relationships. Is your wife going to feel less committed to you because you're always obsessing about that XLT hybrid in the garage? Are you going to give up weekends with your kids so you can stay home and wax it? Will your 4 year old need a lifetime of therapy because of that time you came home and freaked when you saw his bike leaned up against the door?

Now of course we haven't even talked about 30 years of insurance premiums, maintenance, repairs, etc. And what happens when at year 24 you decide to take it for a rare Sunday drive and get sideswiped by some moron on their cell phone? Goodby all that hard work, money and sacrifice.

So save yourself all the costs, all the heartaches, the possible divorce and everything else and just drive and enjoy your Maverick. If you invested every penny you'd otherwise spend on keeping your potential classic, after 30 years you'd have enough money to go out and buy yourself a vacation home or a Lamborghini. Maybe both.

Not gonna lie, all the best SEMA style builds are the batshit crazy ones. I despise the no talent hacks who just bring a lifted truck every year. So on the topic of project cars, I've thought how a really wild build for a maverick would be to take the engine out, buy a 5.0 or 5.2, put it in the bed so it becomes mid-engine, slam it, and widebody it, maybe with some electric motors connected to the front wheels to make it AWD.
Supercharged Godzilla and Vdrive in the bed of a hybrid. On a FlatOut Coilover kit. Through the gates of Valhalla.... at 40mpg..... sometimes!!

No, nay, never. The mav will not start the kind of revolution the mustang started and will never create the same buzz. Objectively it's not all that special.

I'm stealing those stickers and putting them in the side of this maverick build if it ever happens. Psycho is right 🤣.

It’s also a bit sobering to think that at my age —55– there wouldn’t be enough time left for a vehicle to appreciate anyway!

No, it’ll be more like the first Ranger. Unremarkable.

Anything is collectable but the Maverick is a rehash of other unibody trucks like Dodge and Subaru and to my ken none of those are are especially collectable.
I would agree here. The 1965-1966 run was 1 million cars. Imagine, 1 million cars 60 years ago…..

I may be biased. I may also run my 1966 HiPo mustang hard….

good for you. I've had a 66 2+2 hipo, 70 351C, 76 302, 87 5.0 and my current 95 Cobra so call me biased as well.

I had my 91 Mustang for over 25 years as my daily driver before it was t-boned. 2.4L 4 banger but it had 2 coils and 8 plugs. She was just starting to show her age- I had it repainted the original colour again at about 18-19 years. It was fun to drive, but my wife hated it. I was going to get collectors plates just to piss her off!
