Matte usually means not glossy. I was trying to come up with a word for all these new shades of gray, but come up with one. Maybe “shades of gray” is it.

I actually had to look up, what the current "Non-Metallic" colors are called.
"Matte" is what kept coming up...
Your NOT the only one, trying to explain these new colors.
They are basic "Gloss Paint" with no additives..

Here is an observation. I watch many television auto auctions. Never have I seen one Maverick on either Barrett-Jackson nor Mecum.

Non-metallic colours can be glossy or matte. Metallic colours have aluminum flakes in them that might them shiny.

This article gives a good break down on the differences in vehicle paint types. Area 51 is likely just a cheap solid paint, given that it's a free option.

Yes, I DO know what "Matte" is.
I have used those paints in my RR modeling for the last 35 years...

But, the "Public" is referring to these colors (Area 51, Cactus/Fighter Jet, Terrain) as a "Matte" or "Flat" when describing them. Probably, comparing them to the "Metallics" that they are so use to seeing for decades..
Hey, as long as they leave the "aluminum flakes" out of the paint, I am Happy!

They are solid or flat colours. The colour Area 51 isn't even remotely matte (at least not on the Mavericks/Bronco/Bronco sports I've seen with that colour). I mean I guess they look that way when not in direct sunlight, but most paint kind of does too. Not sure what public you mean in this context. People here, random people who you met?

NO... Area 51 will NOT be a classic color. And will just be remembered, (if at all) on being one of the "Earth-tone" colors of this period...

I liked the color, a lot, but never felt it looked good with Navy Pier and too damn cheap to spend the bucks for the BAP so what was I to do? Order my Maverick in Iconic Silver, that's what, which goes quite well with the interior and jet black wheels of the FX/4.

I don't think Area 51 will become a classic but it seems to be attractive to some members of the opposite sex.

I recently was at the local recyclers when I heard a woman say, loudly, "What a beautiful color." When I turned to see what had brought on the remark i realized that a very attractive, 20 something, blond was talking about my Maverick. When I told her the name of the color she thought it was funny.

So, regardless of whether or not commenters here like or don't like the color it does attract the ladies.

I suspect Cyber-orange is more likely to be a classic, not many people want to have a vehicle that looks like a school bus or taxi from the factory, so not many out there.

Well, a school bus and taxi are more yellow. The Cyber Orange has a richer deeper color.
