Bought a new 2024 hybrid and unsure when to do first oil change given the vehicle is over a year old as is the oil. Build date is 8/2024. Some say the factory oil fill is full syn, others say it is a special oil. Dealer says its special and to not worry about "time" and to change at 2500 miles. We drive about 400 miles a month so changing it at 2500 miles would be put the oil at almost 2 years old. Suggestions appreciated.

Your dealer is a knucklehead, unless he considers Motorcraft Full Syn 0w-20 "special". Break-in oil is a relic of the automotive past. Change it and filter at your convenience, put a couple thousand miles on it then change it, you're done.

Oil (in the plastic bottle) actually does have a 'recommended' shelf life (out of sunlight etc) but it's like 5 or 6 years so don't sweat that. Oil in the crankcase - don't know but doubt a year or 2 makes any difference whatsoever as you'll be changing it soon.

Hybrids don't need oil changes.
If you read a few forums you'd know this.

Welcome to the Maverick Truck Club forum from Alaska!

Please post pictures of your new Maverick. :camera:

I purchased my 2025 Ford Maverick Lariat Hybrid May 1st. I also am a low mileage driver. Mine is at 1,170 miles. I plan on changing mine next month.

Have seen a UOA and vid of full syn low miles, a few thousand, that were 18 and 24 months old that were fine. Lots of life left. Only concern is the manual and common belief to change oil "annually".

Im feeling "ok" with running oil 1 year plus a few months past the build date. Should be 1k+ total miles, 500+ miles on ICE.

Thanks!

Agree. Don’t understand why auto makers continue to put oil filler caps on hybrids. Vestigial component?

Seriously though, if I were driving 30,000 miles per year instead of my 3000 - I would definitely want the Maverick Hybrid instead of my Ecoboost. I’d change oil at 10,000 on that hybrid instead of 3000/12mo on my turbo. Those 10,000 mile changes would cost me 3x more than my 3,000 mile changes - but I’m going to follow the Ford Engineer recommendations either way.

I would do what the factory recommends, but at least once a year.

I have a 24 Maverick hybrid bought on Oct 1 2024. It now has 31000 miles on it. I've been changing oil about every 6000 miles but now I'm going to push it to 9000.....recommendations is 7500 to 10000 miles

Do consider an oil analysis . Good info about oil condition, engine wear since new. And if the oil doing its job.

And if you discover it is not doing it's job what then? Damage already done isn't it?
Had multiple analysis done, on both Motorcraft Blend and full synthetic types oil. . Analysis reports reveal good lubrication property, but the viscosity lower than the oil specified viscosity range. To me a concern. The oil analysis experts suggest the low viscosity not a major concern.

So this is the first car you’ve ever owned and have no idea when to change the oil .

shooting from the hip, I would change the factory oil/filter about 6 months in if you're not getting to the 2500 mile recommendation in the first year. There are metal shavings and other gunk from the assembly that don't get completely cleaned out before it's put on the lot. Not major, but enough that you'd be making a good bet to change it out in order to prevent wear and extend engine life. Assuming you're going to keep it for more than 100k (maybe not, reading your post).

Personally, I don't trust oil change places and especially dealership disservice centers to use the correct oil or to even bother changing the filter (seen this many times from other owner's reports). So, I do it myself. The chances of wrong oil and no filter change are low, but not impossible. A recommended independent shop would be best, especially if they let you bring your own oil/filter or already use the ones you want. (I use Mobil-1 full syn)

anecdote; my Mom insisted on using the BMW dealership disservice center for all her maintenance and repairs for her X5; at a premium price, because she assumed they would "do it right". They stripped the oil pan bolt on a routine oil change, and she brought it back dripping oil the next day. They told her it must have been something she did, and it would cost several thousand dollars for a new oil pan. She did not agree with that assessment. My brother, an experience mechanic, tapped the oil drain to a larger size plug and the X5 was good ever after. She stopped going to the disservice center, and made the useless gesture of telling them why. They offered her 20% off her next oil change in response. She started taking it, and now the replacement Q5, to a private German auto repair place for oil changes and maintenance and has never had another problem.

Didn’t see either of those conditions implied in the OP. 🤷‍♂️
