That's a gap alright.That's to cover the "Pillar C" - the rear pillar for the roof. That's where the seat belts are secured to and also needed room for the 4" (?) rear speakers. Hence the reason for the width of the cover and shorter rear window:

I am more worried about the fender cover, where it meets the tailgate:
