The thing about that thread is it started as a discussion about tariffs and then turned into this guy did or didn't do this or that and it became politically charged. The original discussion of tariffs was actually good because I am actually still unsure how they work for say Ford who's an American company but has the vehicle built in Mexico. But I did get upset when it became politically charged.

What part don't you understand? No reason it can't be answered here.

The company headquarters don't really matter. A Honda made and sold here won't be subject to a tariff.

So then no matter what company or where the parts are from if it's assembled in Mexico there would be a tariff? Also if the car is normally 30,000 manufacturer suggested retail price and the tariff is in effect does that mean the car would now be 37500 msrp? Or is the tariff only based on what it cost Ford to make the vehicle? So say Ford builds the Maverick and it only cost them $20,000 to build it The tariff would be on the 20,000.

I was locked out of MTC for 30 days last year because I dared to make the observation that some of the bed extensions people were using were dangerous and should be illegal (they are dangerous, and they should be illegal, because they swing crazy wide and can decaptiate a cyclist).

Really, that's it. Somebody reported me and the moderators banned me for 30 days. Hey, it's their site. But it left me scratching my head. There was nothing offensive in my post. Just "this is dangerous and should be illegal". Banned for a month.

Tends to happen when a vague thread is started with no sources at all.

this is a legitimate complaint when someone starts talking about something new that they heard on a YouTube video, or read in one 'article' published by MotorAirBiscuit or Jaloptwits.

but in this case, come on. every single news site you might choose to read had coverage of the proposed tariffs. it was big news. some said 25 Feb, some said 1 Feb. the POTUS tweeted about it. there were official statements made directly to the press.

The tariff (tax) is imposed when the item is imported. Even cars built here experience this stuff when their components or raw materials are imported and taxed with a tariff. It's just already built into the cost so maybe you as the consumer don't think about it.

I believe the basis for the tariff is the market value (MSRP?) but I'm not 100% on that. What I do know is that the importer, who I assume in this case is Ford, pays that tariff to the US government. Ford needs to make money so that extra cost will be passed to the consumer one way or another.

The funniest part is the fact that the only thing I truly knew, up until recently, about tariffs was that we the consumer would pay them somehow. 😂.

I try to stay away from making political statements on forums. Half of the forum won't agree with me anyway. Instead, I focus on whining about the realities of owning a relatively inexpensive truck in modern times with squeaks, rattles, and battery failures.

Maybe I do need a timeout. Milk and cookies would be nice.
