I'm actually pretty content with the way that it down shifts in in tow / haul mode but if a reflash would have fixed the manual shifting problem in mine, that would be greatThe Cobb transmission tunes are well worth reflashing the ECU. The stock shifting from Ford is garbage. Hated it.
Thanks for the tips Dalola and Jason!Yes. Mine does it, too. Usually when I am running in eco mode, in the hills, less than 50 mph. When it annoys me, I just bump it up to sport mode temporarily until I got through the slow area![]()
Well, and as I indicated in my message. my wifes 2023 Escape never did this and it's the exact same transmission. I happen to visit a dealer in Mechancisville, VA and their transmission expert offered to reset the tanny's computer module. As I left the dealership I no longer experience this "wrong gear for the speed" issue!Unfortunately they all ( 8 speed trannys) do it. My 24 Eco XLT does it also, from day one.![]()
Well, you are a lucky guy! Resetting the on-board tranny, as you call it, computer module did the trick! All these issues and I have not a single one.
My 2024 AWD Lariat Eco has no, none, nada issues.
At 40-45 I’m comfortably in 5 or 6. Once on the flat and level at 45 it’ll drop into 7th and the tach settles real low but it never lugs. At least I think it’s 7th, might be 6th. My Tranny is so friggin smooth it’s very hard to tell what gear it’s in after 3rd.
I ease my foot down and it spools up so super smooth.
Now if I mash the gas Pepper downshifts to get me on pipe, err as you were, on the turbo.
Another very skilled driver in here said it best.
“Always drive like you’re barefoot with a raw egg under your foot on the gas pedal.
Use all the throttle you want right up to WOT.
But don’t break the egg.
WOT, Wide Open Throttle.
My Ecoboost won’t go into 8th below 60.
Having two overdrives is cool.
Doing 65 at a super low RPM is so relaxed.
Then without breaking the egg I mash it down from say 20% throttle to 75%
My Tranny downshifts a couple of gears and my turbo spool up.
90 MPH happens so fast it’s just spooky that a 2.0 Liter 4 banger can pull like a small V-8.
And No I am not gay bashing, it’s always been called a, ‘Tranny’
:’P
That's because it's been reset and hasn't finished the "learning" process yet. The low rpm behavior will return eventually. It's programmed that way for fuel efficiency. As I left the dealership I no longer experience this "wrong gear for the speed" issue!
Well, I learned to drive using standard shift back in the mid 60's. Drove cars, vans and trucks in the Military and it just unnerved me when a driver would shift way to early into a higher gear and almost chocking of the engine. Unfortunately that annoyance after 60 years stayed with me LOL!Yes, mine sometimes does that as well but it stops when I let off the gas then punch it a little bit. Seems benign to me. I can’t imagine that it’s going to cause any damage. Just a quirk that it has. All vehicles have some kind of weirdness to them.
You might also try; let off gas, shift to neutral, back to drive then resume acceleration. Works for me.
My dealer also reset the tranny computer module a few weeks after I bought my 24 when I complained. Worked great for a couple months then it started again. Was told it “relearned” to the way I drove? Thanks for the tips Dalola and Jason!

The way you and I learned to drive is better for longevity of the engine and transmission. There are huge incentives for manufacturers to tune things for fuel efficiency these days, and the result of that is what you're experiencing in normal mode. Luckily they also provide you with the ability to change modes.Well, I learned to drive using standard shift back in the mid 60's. I think from the people I’ve talked to and the very small number of problems talked about in this forum indicate Mavericks with problems are few and far between.Well, you are a lucky guy! Resetting the on-board tranny, as you call it, computer module did the trick!
Exactly. Computer shifts to the highest gears asap for best fuel economy. It can lug the engine & turbo in the process - but the EPA don’t care about that! The way you and I learned to drive is better for longevity of the engine and transmission. Lobo ignores the 2nd gear entirely with the “quick shift 7 speed trans”.Hopefully they changed some stuff from the 25 Tremor. The manual mode in my Tremor is a joke. It refuses to use 2nd gear at all and will ignore a manual downshift all together if it means it will put the engine above about 3500 rpm. Funny part is that in auto with cruise, it will use 2nd gear and will downshift to over 3500 rpm….
Same thing with the Tremor. I almost think that I have a glitch or something because in manual shift mode with the CC turned off, it will always skip second gear, and it will not let me manually downshift if that means putting it at about 3500 RPMs or higher. But the weird part is, with CC and ACC on, set at a speed, and with tow / haul or sport mode turned on, it will use second gear if you are going slow enough and downhill, and it will downshift to above 3500 RPM if you're going down long enough hill. It's like it has backwards rules for what constitutes unsafe RPMs between manual and automatic.Lobo ignores the 2nd gear entirely with the “quick shift 7 speed trans”.
I usually let the computer downshift automatically in city driving M mode. You can feel the revs jump each time it downshifts.
I do notice it ignores my downshifts sometimes descending. I guess it will only rev match to a point (3500rpm?) then say “nope - you ain’t going there!
Is this “M” mode only a 25 thing, cause it ain’t on my 24 Eco? Ignorance, I know!Same thing with the Tremor.
