The First Oil Change: Time vs. Miles

We just bought a '26 XLT 2.0 EcoBoost a few days ago. This will be a second utility vehicle for my wife and I. We will (likely) rack up 4,000 miles or less each year, mostly around town driving. I'd like to keep the Maverick for 12 years or so and then hand it off in cherry condition to a family member.

Given that background, I usually change new car break-in oil & filter by at most 2,000 miles. The issue right now is the time duration. The Maverick was made in January '26 so six months has already gone by, just 105 miles on the odometer right now. So do I wait until around December for that first oil/filter change or take it in sooner given the elapsed time since it was built? How about thereafter, is 12 months and 4,000 miles a decent interval given the turbo dynamics? I'll be using Chevron Supreme gas exclusively.

Page 461 of the initially released 2026 owners manual states:

"Do not exceed one year or 10,000 mi (16,000 km) between service intervals. Hybrid vehicles may achieve longer distances between oil changes, but do not exceed the
one-year max oil change interval."

So you are on the right track, I think, to change it yearly regardless of the low mileage.

I have to ask, is this person someone that will be just coming of age being a new driver in 12 years? I have heard this sentiment expressed before about keeping some vehicle cherry to pass off to a future family member and rarely does it turn out the way people think.

Usually said person either does not want the vehicle or if they do take it, run it into the ground in short order negating any special care you took prior.

I would change it out to Full Synthetic oil of your choice for piece of mind. Can't hurt and will get all the break in metal out so far. I do every 5k Full Syn. on my 2.0L Just what I do. Enjoy the Mav!

Personally, I would change it right away because there’s no telling what they put in it at the factory. Just piece of mind.

My 24 2.0 I change it every 6 months regardless of mileage. I only drive mine 3,000 miles per year.

Am in the same situation as you, retired only drive maybe 5k a year almost all local driving, stop and so stuff, am on my 3rd Maverick 22 FX4, 25 Lariat, 26 Lobo and any vehicle I have owned in the last 30 years, I always change the break-in oil between 1/2k than every 4/5k or because I never get more than 5k once a year, we have yearly state inspections once a year so I change the oil and every other oil change rotate the tires. I rarely keep a vehicle after the warranty expires, so am helping out the next owner of one of mine, 100 bucks a year at my dealer is not going to kill me, they aways run specials during the slow seasons. Never listen to Ford if you want to keep your vehicle 12 or more years. Get the popcorn out guys.

Why every 6 months John? Possible moisture/gas in the oil, other reasons?

I run into this with my antique muscle car. I change the oil every spring. It might not even have 500 miles on the oil.

They don't use break in oil in automobiles anymore. They haven't done it for quite some time either.
